Articles
An Article is a word used to modify a noun, which is a person, place,
object, or idea. Articles are words that define a noun as specific or
unspecific. The, a, an - Articles of English.
Eg. After the long day, the cup of tea tasted particularly good.
By using the article the, we’ve shown that it was one specific day that was
long and one specific cup of tea that tasted good.
Eg. After a long day, a cup of tea tastes particularly good.
By using article a, we’ve created a general statement, implying that any
cup of tea would taste good after any long day.

Conjunctions
Conjunctions are words that link other words, phrases, or clauses together.
Conjunctions allow you to form complex, elegant sentences and avoid the
choppiness of multiple short sentences.
Eg. I like cooking and eating, but I don’t like washing dishes afterwards.
Sophie is clearly exhausted, yet she insists on dancing till dawn.
“And”, “but”, “yet” are the words that connect the sentences.

Adverbs and Conjunctions
Adverbs: An adverb can be defined as a word that modifies or gives more
information about a verb, an adjective or another adverb. They describe
when, where, why, how and how often an action takes place. According to
its function,
Adverbs can be classified into different types like adverb of time, adverb of
place, adverb of manner, adverb of degree and adverb of frequency.
Eg. My friend and I ran quickly to get the bus.
Here, the adverb “quickly” explains how the action of running took place.

Conjunctions:
➔ A conjunction is used to combine two or more objects, phrases or
clauses. It can also be termed as connectors as they are employed
in sentences to make connections.
➔ Conjunctions can be found in the latter part of a sentence if they are
used to connect clauses. If conjunctions are used to connect objects
or phrases, they can appear in the beginning, middle or end of the
sentence according to the position of the objects or phrases.

Tense Forms
➔ Past tense: The Past tense describes a completed activity that
happened in the past. In other words, the activity started in the past
and ended in the past.
Eg. My brother entered a hula hoop contest. He won the silver medal.
➔ Present tense: We use the Present tense when an action is happening
right now, or when it happens regularly (or unceasingly, which is why
it's sometimes called present indefinite). Depending on the person,
the simple present tense is formed by using the root form or by
adding -s or -es to the end.

1. Definition:
A complex sentence has two clauses that are of different significance in the
sentence.
The more important clause is an independent clause; it can stand alone as
a sentence.
The less important clause is a dependent clause; it cannot stand alone as a

King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette ruled France from 1774 to 1789, a
time when the country was fighting bankruptcy. The royal couple did not let
France’s insecure financial situation limit their immoderate spending,
however. Even though the minister of finance repeatedly warned the king
and queen against wasting money, they continued to spend great fortunes
on their personal pleasure. This lavish spending greatly enraged the
people of France. They felt that the royal couple bought its luxurious
lifestyle at the poor people’s expense.
Marie Antoinette, the beautiful but exceedingly impractical queen, seemed
uncaring about her subjects’ misery. While French citizens begged for
lower taxes, the queen embellished her palace with extravagant works of
art. She also surrounded herself with artists, writers, and musicians, who
encourage the queen to spend money even more profusely.
While the queen’s favorites glutted themselves on huge feasts at the royal
table, many people in France were starving.

Passage:
The Empty Quarter – An Unexplored Sand Desert
The Arabic name Rub al Khali means “empty quarter.” The name was
given to it because it’s a huge stretch of unbroken sand desert that has
bested kings, adventurers, and nomads for thousands of years. In a region
defined by deserts, the Rub al Khali came to be known for being especially
daunting and inhospitable.
The desert is 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) long, and 500 kilometers (310
miles) wide. Its surface elevation varies from 800 meters (2,600 ft) in the
southwest to around sea level in the northeast. The terrain is covered with
sand dunes with heights up to 250 meters (820 ft), interspersed with gravel
and gypsum plains.
The sand is of a reddish-orange color due to the presence of feldspar.
There are also brackish salt flats in some areas, such as the Umm al
Samim area on the desert’s eastern edge. Sand blows off the surface, of
course, but the

essential shape of the dunes remains intact, probably due to the moisture
leaching up into the base of the dunes from the surrounding sabkhas.
Along the middle length of the desert, there are a number of raised,
hardened areas of calcium carbonate, gypsum, marl, or clay that were
once the site of shallow lakes. These lakes existed during periods from
6,000 to 5,000 years ago and 3,000 to 2,000 years ago. The lakes are
thought to have formed as a result of “cataclysmic rainfall” similar to
present-day monsoon rains and most probably lasted for only a few
years.
Evidence suggests that the lakes were home to a variety of flora and
fauna. Fossil remains indicate the presence of several animal species,
such as hippopotamus, water buffalo, and long-horned cattle. The lakes
also contained small snails, ostracods, and when conditions were suitable,
freshwater clams. Deposits of calcium carbonate and opal phytoliths
indicate the presence of plants and algae. There is also evidence of human
activity dating from 3,000 to 2,000 years ago, including chipped flint tools,
but no actual human remains have been found.
The Empty Quarter receives just 1.2 inches of rain a year. This is a desert that
makes Death Valley and its annual 2.4 inches of rainfall look positively wet!
The area is one of the driest places you can find on earth and subsequently
one of the most sparsely populated. Despite the severe environment of the

Al Rub’ Al Khali desert, several tribes from the Arabian Peninsula have
managed to establish life on its sands. Most tribes that live there do so
close to the edge of the desert. Few roads exist to help settlers find
water spots and oil production centers.
The region is classified as “hyper-arid”, which means that it lacks water for
the growth of plants or the survival of animals. Rainfall is less than 3 cm (1.2
in) every year. The daily temperatures are between 47 °C (117 °F) and 51 °C
(124 °F). Anyone visiting the Rub Al Khali needs to remember to bring plenty
of water. Visitors can enjoy a 4×4 drive in the desert or a camel ride, or
camp out on the dunes.
One of the best experiences in the Empty Quarter is to spend some time
with the Bedouins of the desert. Visitors can enjoy listening to old stories
about Oman, its culture and the desert. This makes it the perfect place to
be if you want to find peace.

During most of my holidays, I go to visit my family members in my
hometown. For my job, I am currently residing in the capital city of my
country but my parents, siblings, grandparents, uncle and aunts are living
in our hometown. So during most of my holidays, I go to visit my family

When I was a university student, I had some friends studying in the same
