Unit - 5: Green Skills - II

(1) Sustainable Development

The environment consists of natural resources and conditions including land, water, mountains,
plains and many more natural things which are getting depleted due to the diverse ecosystem. An
ecosystem comprises plants, animals, and humans who depend on each other.

What is 'Sustainable Development'? The resources that are provided by nature and are being
consumed and utilised by human beings. It is the development that meets the present need of the
world without depleting the resources.

To achieve this development, it's crucial to follow the steps of 4Rs and 1U of sustainability,
which are:

 Refuse: This encourages us to refuse the things that are not in need.
 Reduce: This principle tells us to reduce things that can harm our environment.
 Reuse: This principle can minimise waste by reusing those things that can be used
instead of throwing them away.
 Recycle: This principle minimises landfill waste by recycling items judiciously.

Upcycle

It is the transforming of unwanted products into a newly desirable item.

Importance of Sustainable Development

It refers to the growth which is needed in the present without compromising future generations. It
is vital for several reasons:

 Reduces waste: It reduces waste by promoting the prudent use of resources.

 Healthy food: It promotes healthy food.
 Climate management: It also manages climate change by reducing deforestation and the
excessive use of fossil fuels.
 Resource preservation: It ensures the abundance of resources by preserving them for
future use.
 Biodiversity: It preserves biodiversity by preventing the extinction of species and
protecting ecological interactions.

Problems Related to Sustainable Development

The three main problems are food, water, and fuel:

 Food: Fertile land is required to cultivate crops.

 Water: Water is polluted due to industrial gaseous waste.
 Fuel: Trees are cut down (deforested) for the extraction of fuels.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

 Goal 1 (No Poverty): This goal ensures that everyone should have economic resources.
