(Recapitulations)
1. What is Compton effect? Find the change in wavelength of X-rays due to Compton
process. When is this shift maximum?
3. X-rays of wavelength 0.24 nm are Compton scattered and the scattered beam is
observed at an angle 60o relative to the incident beam, find the wavelength of the
scattered X-rays. Derive the necessary formula you use.
4. Find the maximum possible Compton shifts of wavelength for X-rays of wavelengths
50 and 100 nm. (Given rest mass energy of electron = 0.511 MeV, c = 3×108 m/s, h =
6.62×10-34 J-s, 1 eV = 1.6×10-12 erg and Boltzmann constant k = 1.38 ×10-23 JK-1)
6. Derive Planck’s formula for black-body radiation. Show how Planck’s formula
reduces to (i) Rayleigh-Jeans and (ii)Wien’s distribution formulae as limiting cases.
What is an ultraviolet catastrophe? Obtain (i) Wien’s displacement law and (ii) Stefan-
Boltzmann’s law from Planck’s formula.
7. Given that the wavelength corresponding to maximum emissive power for radiation
from the surface of the Sun is 4900Ǻ. Find the surface temperature of the Sun.
9. Find the wavelength associated with a person weighing 100 kg and moving with
velocity 10m/sec. (Given h = 6.6×10-34 J-sec).
10. Find the de Broglie wavelength and group velocity of an electron having energy 1
MeV (rest-mass energy of electron = 0.511 MeV and hc = 1.24071×10-6eV-m).
11. What are ‘phase velocity’ and ‘group velocity’? Show how they are related to each
other. Find the phase velocity and group velocity of a particle moving with a velocity
104 m/s. Calculate the phase velocity and group velocity of a particle with de Broglie
wavelength 2 picometer.
12. State Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle. Find the order of magnitude estimate of the
size (Bohr radius) and energy (ground state) of a hydrogen atom using this principle.
13. Find the minimum (ground state) energy of one-dimensional harmonic oscillator using
uncertainty relation.
14. Write down Schrödinger equation for a particle of mass m subjected to a potential
U(x,t).
15. Under what condition the space and time parts of the solution can be written as Ψ(x,t)
= T(t)φ(x)? (or, state the condition under which one gets a time-independent
Schrödinger equation).
16. What is the physical interpretation of the wave function Ψ(x,t)? What do you mean by
stationary state?
17. Consider a particle confined in a region between two rigid walls of infinite height
placed at x = 0 and x = L. Write down the stationary (time-independent) Schrődinger
equation for the system. Solve this equation to obtain energy eigenvalues and
corresponding normalised eigenfunctions. Plot the probability density for the ground
state and the first excited state.
18. Find the average position of the particle in this box of width ‘L’ and infinite depth.
19. What is the probability of finding the particle between 0.45L and 0.55L in its ground
state?
20. Write the postulates of quantum mechanics
