Dimensional Control Report

1.0 SCOPE
This scope of the procedure shall cover all the dimensional control activities associated in the
fabrication o f s u p p o r t s f o r t h e i n s t a l l a t i o n o f M e t h a n e S e n s o r s f o r t h e
Project.

2.0 PURPOSE
2.1 The purpose of this Procedure is to define the Methods to be adopted for the Control of
Dimension of Fabricated components in accordance with the AFC Drawings, Client’s
Specifications and applicable Codes

3.0 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS

3.1 Client Specifications:
3.2 Contractor’s Quality Control Manual
3.3 AWS D1.1 Structural Steel Welding Code.
3.4 AFC Drawings

4.0 EQUIPMENT
The equipment, which will be in use for Dimensional Control verification, includes:
4.1 Measuring Tapes
4.2 Plumb
4.3 Spirit Level
4.4 Taut Wire/Chalk-line
4.5 Leveling Instrument
4.6 T-Squares

5.0 RESPONSIBILITY
The Site Quality Control Inspector shall ensure that the Dimensional Verification is done to
achieve dimensional accuracy in accordance with the requirements of this Procedure, and as
obligations by the Contract may require.
The Fabrication Supervisors have the responsibili t y to ensure that t h e required dimensions
and tolerance is maintained during fit-up
6.0 PROCEDURE
This Procedure is intended for accomplishing all Fabrication activities so as to achieve the
maintenance of dimensions within the tolerances specified in Codes, Standards an d
Specifications relating to this Project.

6.1 Fabrication Activities

The scope shall include all Structural supports whose dimensional alterations will affect the
final Installation. Major areas of concern include, but are not limited to the following:
6.1.1 Overall Dimension.
6.1.2 Position of branch connections.
6.1.3 Orientation.
6.1.4 Bolt holes.
6.1.5 Support position.

6.2-DIMENSIONAL
VERIFICATION
6.2.1 The Engineering Manager receives the drawing from the drafting Department. Prior
to issue to the Engineering Manager, the drawing will have been reviewed and
checked by the Drafting Department.
6.2.2 The drawing is then reviewed by the Engine e r i ng Manager for details and to
correct any dimensional errors if applicable.
6.2.3 Afte r Review by the En g i neering Manager, the drawing is then ap p r oved for
Construction (AFC) and released to the Fabrication supervisor for implementation.
6.2.4 The QA/QC department shall ensure that no obsolete drawings are issued.
6.2.5 The relevant materials are identified with a Job Number before being placed in a
“lay down area” and are critically reviewed for traceability by verifying correct
markings, weights and h eat n u m be rs. This is undertaken by the Foreman and
Fitter prior to pre-cutting.
6.2.6 Upon approval of Visual Inspection of materials, individual pieces are
outlined/Measured and re-checked for correct dimension an d identification
numbers, by the Fabrication Supervisor, before the a c t ual cutting process begins.
The QA/QC Department monitors this process.
6.2.7 Visual Inspections on all materials are made by the QA/QC department so as to
check for defects or discontinuities before cutting of materials commences.
6.2.8 During the material cutting process, periodic Visual Inspection of workmanship
Quality is monitored. Correct cutting tools shall be used as required.
6.2.9 Upon completion of the material cutting process, each item is individually
prepared for fit-up by a “cleaning process” such as grinding to ensure that any
cutting flaws or slag are eliminated from each plate/pipe.
6.2.10 After the material are properly grinded, fit-up connections are made, a Visual
Inspection of each fit-up is undertaken to ensure accuracy with respect to
WPS/Quality assurance and minimum distortion during welding.
6.2.11 A dimensional check on all fitted supports is carried out at this time, by the
Construction team, to verify Dimensional Control accuracy before welding takes place.
6.2.12 Dimensions are again checked to verify that dimensions are in accordance with
the AFC Drawings. The QA/QC monitors this process.
The actual dimensional values are re c o rded against the t h e o r et i c al dimensional values as
stated in the Approved for Construction Drawings.
The comparison of “As Built” Dimensions to AFC Drawings with regard to final end to end
Dimension shall be within the Specified Tolerances. The “As Built ” Dimension shall be
recorded on the Shop Drawings for easy verification with the AFC Drawing.
.
6.3 Technical Requirement

6.3.1 Squares of Framing (Structural)

The framing dimensions of the fabricated supports will be measured with the aid of measuring tapes to
ascertain the conformance of the “As Built” to the AFC Drawings and Dimensional
Tolerances given. The Design (T) from AFC Drawings and the Actual (A) which is the “As
Built will be recorded for comparison with Client Specifications.

6.3.2 Straightness Checks

Straightness of Supports shall be made by stretching the length of taut w i re from end to end and
measuring the point of greatest deviation. The greatest deviation shall be in accordance with
the Project Specifications.

7.0 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

The Acceptance Criteria to be adopted for the evaluation of the dimensional values obtained
are given in the Dimensional Tolerances of the Client Specifications.
8.0 DOCUMENTATION
8.1 Results of dimensional values obtained will be recorded on the Shop Drawings to be
signed off with a Dimensional Control form attached.
8.2 Sketches will be attached to the Dimensional Control form for the Structural supports.
