Lesson 1. Cyber Literacy, Digital Citizenship, Intellectual Property

Lesson Objectives: At the end of the lesson the students must have:
1. recognized elements of digital citizenship

Introduction
This module will simply describe you as a digital citizen. You will be able to
understand fully the modern world of computers, the online environment and your
responsibility or role in the cyberspace.

Cyber literacy is knowing where to go to find reliable and accurate resources on


the internet. It focuses on helping students find these resources and avoid incorrect
information. It is how to use software, doing research online, and an understanding how
technology can be used.

The key terms are:


Cyber world: modern world of computers
Cyberspace: online environment
Cyber citizenship: taking responsibility for your role in cyberspace

What is your role as a cyber citizen?

Are you a digital citizen? Digital citizenship is the concept which help teachers,
technology leaders and parents understand what students should know in using
technology. It is important to help student learn, communicate and collaborate safely

Elements of Digital Citizenship
1. Digital Access
• Having access to the internet, cellphones, electronic information and
communication technologies.
• Access to the digital world is key to bring social and economic benefits to
businesses, individuals, and the government.
2. Digital commerce
• Digital commerce is the buying and selling of goods and services through
electronic means or digital channels e.g. the internet, via text message etc.
3. Digital Communication
• Digital communication can be expressed as the electronic exchange of
information.
• Data is transferred over a point-to-point communication channel e.g. Whatsapp
• There are multiple forms of digital communication such as the internet, VoIP,
cellphones, instant messaging, social media and blogs. (Anon 2016)
4. Digital literacy
• Digital literacy is the ability to use the information given to you in conjunction with
communication technologies to find, evaluate, create and communicate
information.
• It requires cognitive and technical skills.
5. Digital etiquette
• It is simply showing good manners on the internet.
• Etiquette rules tend to differ depending on the context. (Anon 2016)

6. Digital Law • Digital law can be defined as the electronic accountability for one’s
actions which are either ethical or unethical. (Anon 2016)

• Privacy & Security

7. Digital rights and responsibilities
• Privileges and freedom extended to all digital technology users.
8. Digital health and wellness
• Digital health and wellness focus on using technology safely and appropriately.
• Digital health and wellness can also be defined as the physical and
psychological well- being of an individual in the digital and technological world.
9. Digital security
It refers to safeguarding the ability to use digital information and information
systems without intrusion, disruption, unsanctioned access or data gathering.
It does not only affect big corporate, they also affect the general public through
scams, identity theft, stalking and cyber bullying. (Anon 2016)
Intellectual Property Rights: Copyright Law and
Related Rights

What is Intellectual Property?


It refers broadly to creations of the human mind. It is to protect the interests of
creators by giving them property rights over their creations. Copyright legislation is part
of intellectual property.

What are protected by intellectual property rights?


• literary, artistic and scientific works;
• performances of performing artists, phonograms, and broadcasts;
• inventions in all fields of human endeavor;
• scientific discoveries;
• industrial designs;
• trademarks, service marks, and commercial names and designations;
• protection against unfair competition; and
• all other rights resulting from intellectual activity in the industrial, scientific,
literary or artistic fields.

Why Protect Intellectual Property?


To give statutory expression to the moral and economic rights of creators in their
creations and to the rights of the public in accessing those creations.
To promote creativity, and the dissemination and application of its results, and to
encourage fair trade, this would contribute to economic and social development.

Branches of Intellectual Property

1. Industrial Property
Industrial property includes (among other items):
• Patents to protect inventions and industrial designs (aesthetic creations
determining the appearance of industrial products)
• Trademarks (& service marks)
Layout-designs of integrated circuits
• Protection against unfair competition

2. Copyright
• Copyright relates to artistic creations, such as books, music, paintings and
sculptures, films and technology-based works such as computer programs and
electronic databases
• Copyright is known as author’s rights.
Philippine Copyright law
• Is enriched in the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, officially known
as Republic Act No. 8293.
• The law is partly based on United States copyright law.
• Protects patents, trademarks, and other forms of intellectual property.
• There are laws that protect copyrights: The Optical Media act is an example of
such.
• Enforced through a body established by the law: the Intellectual Property Office
and its various branches.
• Implementation is done with the coordination of the IPO and the Copyright
Division of the National Library of the Philippines.

Two Types of Rights under Copyright


• Economic Rights
• Moral Rights

Economic Rights include:


• Reproduction
• Rental
• Public Display
• Public Performance
• Other communication to the public of the work.

Moral Rights include:


• Right of Attribution
• Right of Integrity
• Right to restrain use of his name
Related Rights
Related rights are the rights that have their special subject matter, which is
mainly related to copyright.

Related Rights include:


• Right of Performers
• Right of producers of phonograms
• Right of film producers
• Right of broadcasting organizations
• Right of publishers in their editions
• Right of producers of databases
