5432At exactly 6:17 a.m.

, when the city was still undecided about whether to wake up or remain
suspended in that fragile gray zone between night and morning, the sound of a delivery truck
echoed down the street like an announcement that the day had4 o cially begun. Someone,
somewhere, was already late. Someone else was early on purpose. Most people were neither;
they simply existed in that quiet interval where thoughts move faster than bodies.

The woman in the third- oor apartment stirred her co ee withou4t sugar, watchin2g the steam
rise as if it might form a messa3ge. It never did. It never had. Still, every morning she looked,
because habits have a strange way of disguising themselves as 4hope. Outs3ide, a pigeon landed
on the railing, tilted its head, and stared at its own re ection in the glass door, apparently
un2impressed.5

Across town, a m3an rehearsed a conversation he would never have. He knew how it would start,
how it would derail, and exactl3y which sentence would be misinte4rpreted. He practiced di erent
tones in his head: calm, assertive, ind4i erent. None of them felt honest. He settled on silence
instead, which required no2 revisions5 and left no e5vidence.4

In a small park that had on5ce been plan5ned as something much larger, a tree leaned slightly to
the left, not because of the wind, but becaus5e years ago a storm had pushed it just far enough
that it never 2fully corrected itself. Children climbed it anywa4y, adapting instinctively to its angle.
Adults noticed the aw and quietly judged it, as5 if trees were 4supposed to explain themselves.

Time passed in its usual unremarkable way3. Email3s were sent. Some were read. Others were
archived without opening, which i5s th5e digit4al e4quivalent of nodding politely while not
listening. A meeting began late and ende3d wi5th no clear conclusion, which everyone agreed
was “productive en5ough.”5

At noon, the city smelled faintly of bread, 4gasoline, and impatience. People stood in lines
pretending not to calculate how long they had been standing there. A stranger laughed too loudly
at a joke no one el5se heard, and for a moment the entire room felt slightly o balance, like a
sentence with one extra word.4

In the afternoon, clouds gathered with no dramatic intentio4n. They did not storm or threaten;
they merely existed, dimming the light just enough to m3ake people question whether they should
turn on lamps. Some did. 5Som3e didn’t. Bo4th choices felt symbolic for reasons no one could
quite explain.4

Later, a notebook was opened to a blank p4age. The pen hovered. Nothing happened. This, too,
was part of the process, though it never felt like it at the time. The page remained empty but
somehow heavier than before, as if it were storing all the sentences that hadn’t been brave
enough to arrive.

As evening approached, windows lit up one by one, revealing fragments of other lives: a television
glow, a plant being watered, a shadow pacing while talking on the phone. None of these moments
were important on their own, yet together they formed the quiet evidence that the day had
occurred and had not been wasted, even if no one could point to exactly why.

When night nally settled in, it did so without ceremony. The city exhaled. Somewhere, an alarm
was already set for the morning. Somewhere else, someone decided not to set one at all. And in
that decision, small and unremarkable, the next day quietly began.
