Household Practices and Carbon Footprint

The study investigates the relationship between household practices and perceived carbon footprints in Sitio Pulo, Batangas City, aiming to contribute to climate change awareness and inform local government policies aligned with the Paris Agreement. It emphasizes the importance of household behaviors in reducing carbon emissions and focuses on perceived rather than actual carbon footprints to assess awareness and readiness for change. The research utilizes a survey and statistical analysis to explore these dynamics and proposes community programs to promote sustainable practices.

The Correlation between Household Practices and Perceived Carbon Footprin

t in Sitio Pulo, Barangay Bolbok, Batangas City

Research Output (What will the research contribute): To contribute to the cause of the Paris Ag
reement where the study can be an insight on how people understand carbon footprints and how t
heir household practices affect the fight for climate change. This study can be a means for Local
Governments to create policies that aligns with the Paris Agreement.

Why choose this study?: For one, Climate Change has been felt more here in our country lookin
g back at 2025. Typhoons are stronger, the heat we experience has become unbearable, and study
also shows that last year was the second or third hottest year on record. ([Link]). Additi
onally, we also noticed that most people when they think of contributing to climate change are re
cycling, proper disposal of trash, and using paper straws where in fact there is a simpler term to r
emember and that is Carbon Footprints. It is generally the total of greenhouse gases we generally
generate through someone's actions. Carbon Footprints can be calculated based on the quantity of
electricity you use, the food you consume, the way you travel, and the products you buy. For exa
mple, a person with a car can travel the same amount of distance and the same amount of time as
a jeepney would but the person driving the car contributes more greenhouse gases than those that
commute. Why? Because the jeepney has carried and dropped off more than people in the 1 trip i
t does, a commuters carbon footprint will be significantly lower than the person that uses a car to
work.

Who will benefit from this study?: Local Governments can use this as a means to create policie
s for the fight for climate change, Students can be more aware with carbon footprints and relation
ship of their own household practices, and to the future researchers can use this as a reference in
order to explore more of carbon footprints and household practices.

Why is household behavior crucial in reducing carbon emissions compared to industrial ac

tions?: Because industrial actions will follow through only if the law limits them and most comp
anies are hard to influence to limit or request them to divert to environmental friendly practices o
r for them to shutdown immediately when their industry onl contributes to the carbon emissions
while household behaviours and attitudes toward carbon footprints are easier to fulfill and botto
m-up strategies for complex problems like these are much easier to progress to and practices like
these are normalized and more mainstreamed it can reach people more than local and national la
ws can do.
Why focus on perceived carbon footprint instead of actual carbon footprint?
The study focuses on perceived carbon footprint because perception strongly influences behavior.
Measuring actual carbon footprint requires technical tools and extensive data, which were beyon
d the scope of this study. Understanding perception allows us to assess awareness, misjudgments,
and readiness for behavioral change, which are essential for designing community-based interven
tions.

How does your study support SDG 13 (Climate Action)?

The study supports SDG 13 by promoting awareness of household-level contributions to carbon

emissions and identifying practices that can reduce environmental impact. By encouraging sustai
nable household behavior, the research contributes to grassroots climate action and community r
esilience.

How does TPB relate to your variables?

In this study, household practices represent behavior, perceived carbon footprint reflects awarene
ss and attitude, and socio-economic factors influence perceived behavioral control. Social norms
within the community also affect whether residents adopt sustainable practices.

How did you measure perceived carbon footprint?

Perceived carbon footprint was measured through respondents’ self-assessment of how much the
ir household activities contribute to carbon emissions, based on their daily [Link] did yo
u use Slovin’s formula?
Slovin’s formula was used to determine an appropriate sample size given the total population and
a 5% margin of error. This ensures the sample is statistically representative of the population.

Why did you use a 5-point Likert scale?

A 5-point Likert scale allows respondents to express varying degrees of frequency or agreement,
making it suitable for measuring attitudes and behaviors related to household practices.

How did you ensure the validity of your questionnaire?

The questionnaire was developed based on related studies and reviewed by experts. It aligns with
the conceptual framework and research objectives, ensuring content validity.

Why did you use the Chi-square test of independence?

The Chi-square test is appropriate because it determines whether there is a significant association
between categorical variables, such as household practices and levels of perceived carbon footpri
nt.

What level of significance did you use?

The study used a 0.05 level of significance, which is standard in social science research and bala
nces the risk of Type I and Type II errors

What community program can you propose based on your study?

A community-based sustainability program focusing on energy conservation, waste reduction, an
d environmental awareness seminars can be proposed to reduce household carbon footprint.

EXPLANATION IN SOP:
SO for our SOP hindi po sya nakukuha or what BECAUSE PO IT SIMPLY HIGHLIGHTS THE
MAIN PROBLEM OF THE STUDY OR THE QUETION PO NA WE WANT TO ADDRESS.
FOR EXAMPLE PO, IN OUR SOP WE HAVE QUETION HERE NA THOSE PO ARE EXAC
TLY THE THINGS WE AIM TO FIND OUT PO IN OUR RESEARCH. OUR SOP PO IS MAI
NLY STATES WHAT WE WANT TO ANSWER THROUGH THE STUDY AND ITS CLEAR

ON WE SEEK OR RESOLVE DURING THE CONDUCT PO OF OUR STUDY.

EXPLANATION IN RESEARCH INSTRUMENT:

For this study po, our questionnaire is basically a survey that collects information from the respo
ndents about their household practices and how they perceive their own carbon footprint. We use
d a five-point Likert scale po, which is a scale from “Always” to “Never.” A Likert scale is a typ
e of rating scale used to measure how often, how strongly, or to what extent a person agrees or di
sagrees with a statement. It helps us organize and quantify people’s habits and opinions in a clear
and structured way, turning their responses into data that we can analyze to find patterns and und
erstand them better. Then po, to see if there’s a real connection between their household practice
s and how they perceive their carbon footprint, gagamit po kami ng Chi-square test, which tells u
s po if the relationship between these things is statistically significant
