CHEMISTRY NOTES – BASIC CONCEPTS

1. What is Chemistry?
Chemistry is the branch of science that deals with the study of matter, its composition, structure,
properties, and the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions.

2. Matter
Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space.
States of matter:
• Solid – fixed shape and volume
• Liquid – fixed volume but no fixed shape
• Gas – no fixed shape and no fixed volume

3. Physical and Chemical Changes

Physical Change:
A change in which no new substance is formed.
Examples: melting of ice, boiling of water

Chemical Change:
A change in which a new substance is formed.
Examples: rusting of iron, burning of paper

4. Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures

Element:
A pure substance made of only one type of atom.
Example: Hydrogen, Oxygen

Compound:
A substance formed by chemical combination of two or more elements.
Example: Water (H2O), Carbon dioxide (CO2)

Mixture:
A physical combination of two or more substances.
Example: Air, salt and water

5. Atoms and Molecules

Atom:
The smallest particle of an element that retains its chemical properties.

Molecule:
The smallest particle of a compound that can exist independently.

6. Laws of Chemical Combination

Law of Conservation of Mass:
Mass can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction.

Law of Constant Proportions:

A chemical compound always contains the same elements in the same proportion by mass.

7. Acids, Bases, and Salts

Acids:
Substances that produce H+ ions in aqueous solution.
Examples: Hydrochloric acid (HCl), Sulphuric acid (H2SO4)

Bases:
Substances that produce OH- ions in aqueous solution.
Examples: Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), Potassium hydroxide (KOH)

Salts:
Formed by the reaction of an acid and a base.
Example: Sodium chloride (NaCl)

8. Chemical Reactions
A chemical reaction is a process in which reactants are converted into products.
Types of reactions:
• Combination reaction
• Decomposition reaction
• Displacement reaction
• Double displacement reaction

9. Importance of Chemistry
Chemistry plays a vital role in medicine, agriculture, industry, food production, and environmental
protection.
