Two Minutes Hate

Two Minutes Hate shows how the Party uses fear and anger to control people. It starts off

with the telescreen blasting a harsh noise and Goldstein’s face appears. The crowd reacts

instantly with disgust and rage. Even people who seem quiet lose control of themselves and

scream at the screen. We also learn a lot about Winston from this moment. He feels the same

anger everyone else feels, but there are moments when he starts to think differently. For a few

seconds he sees Goldstein as a lonely fighter for the truth. Then suddenly the crowd’s emotions

overwhelm him again. This shows how broken Winston is inside. He wants to resist the Party,

but he is still influenced by the same manipulation as everyone else. The Two Minutes Hate is

basically propaganda in its strongest form, as it uses fear to distract people from the truth. This

also happens in real life in the form of political campaigns and misinformation. It also connects

to the article about smart TVs and privacy, because both show how controlling information lets

powerful groups shape people.
