WVSU-Pototan Campus SOED launches Extension Training on Proper Waste Segregation in

Igang, Pototan

The West Visayas State University–Pototan Campus (WVSU-PC) through its School of Education
(SOEd) spearheaded the Extension Training on Proper Waste Segregation with the theme
“Yucks to Yey! (Y2Y): A Waste Management and Gardening Project” on October 17, 2025, at
Barangay Igang, Pototan, Iloilo.
The activity gathered around 50 participants composed of barangay officials, community
residents, and WVSU faculty and students. The training aimed to strengthen environmental
awareness and promote sustainable waste management practices through education and
community collaboration.
The morning session opened with a prayer and the singing of the National Anthem, followed by
welcome remarks from Hon. Melchor B. Mogato, Punong Barangay of Igang. Messages of
support were also delivered by Dr. Marlene S. Gloria, Director of SOEd, and Dr. Raquel P.
Pedrajas, Director for Research, Extension, and Innovation (RIE) of WVSU-Pototan Campus.
Partner agencies also expressed their commitment to the initiative, including Mr. Kent Roger P.
Peñaflorida, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer; Mr. Gilbert Quimba,
Municipal Agriculturist of the Department of Agriculture, represented by Mr. John Lene Peniel
F. Acanto; and Hon. Rey Umalay, Sangguniang Bayan Member of Pototan, via recorded video-
message.
Dr. Mae B. Angeles, Project Leader, presented the background and timeline of Yucks to Yey!
emphasizing how proper waste segregation can transform waste into useful gardening
resources. The morning activities also featured a Values Orientation Seminar led by Dr. Nove D.
Jalandoni, Director for Academic Affairs and Gender and Development (GAD) Coordinator.
The highlight of the afternoon session was the Memorandum of Agreement/Memorandum of
Understanding (MOA/MOU) signing between WVSU-Pototan Campus and local stakeholders.
The included Mr. Kent Roger P. Peñaflorida, Mr. Gilbert Quimba (through Mr. John Lene Peniel
F. Acanto), Hon. Ermalyn Sumergido, Barangay Kagawad of Igang, and Dr. Raquel P. Pedrajas,
representing WVSU-Pototan Campus.
Participants also signed a commitment pledge to support continuous waste segregation and
gardening initiatives in their community. The program concluded with an evaluation of IEC
materials, closing remarks by Ms. Ermalyn Sumergido, and a group photo opportunity.
Serving as Master of Ceremonies was Dr. Paul Ramsey Belencion.
The Yucks to Yey! project is part of WVSU-Pototan Campus’s continuing advocacy to empower
communities through environmental education—transforming everyday “yucks” into
sustainable “yeys” for a cleaner and greener Pototan.
