PV cells in Series
Non-Identical PV Cells in Series:
❖ When PV cells are mounted on the roof of mountains expose to solar radiation there may be neighboring
buildings, the shadow of which may fall on the portion of PV cells, there may be tress nearby whose
shadow will be falling on the PV cells.
❖ Some PV cells will be under shade and the other will be under light. Therefore, the short-circuit current
of the PV cells in bright sunlight will be much higher than that of the PV cells which are in the shade.
❖ Assuming PV cell 2 slightly lower than that of PV cell 1 indicates that the short circuit current of the PV
cell 2 is smaller, meaning that this cell is shaded and the open circuit voltage 𝑉𝑂𝐶1 and 𝑉𝑂𝐶2 as same for
both the cells.

PV cells in Series
❖ When 𝑅𝑜 is infinite circuit becomes open circuit which means the load line is along the x axis and the
operating point lies on x-axis.
❖ 𝑅𝑜 is changed to some finite value then slope of load line increases, and there will be a new operating
point.
❖ Further increase in the load i.e., decrease in 𝑅𝑜 makes voltage across PV cell 2 zero. the operating point
exactly lies on the vertical axis for cell 2. PV cell 1 alone supplies load.
❖ Further increase in the load makes PV cell 2 characteristics shift to second, this is as sink quadrant for
cell 2. So cell 1 is acting as a source, cell 2 is acting as sink.
