a beginner should master the most;
• Be mindful with the tone marks when
pronouncing each number.

• When translating numbers from 11-19,
follow the pattern below:
十 shí (10) then add the lacking
Example: 十五 shí wǔ 15
10 add = 15
• Translating numbers like 20, 30, 40, 50,
60, 70, 80, 90:
20 二十 èr shí 60 六十 liù shí
30 三十 sān shí 70 七十 qī shí
40 四十 sì shí 80 八十 bā shí
50 五十 wǔ shí 90 九十 jiǔ shí
_____ multiply by 10 十 (shí)

Example: 80 八十 (bā shí)


8 × 10 = 80
bā × shí = bā shí
• Translating numbers like 29, 45, 38, 67
etc, follow the pattern below:
Example:
89 = 80 + 9
= bāshí + jiǔ = bāshíjiǔ
= 八十九
