Module-wise Numerical Questions in Engineering

The document outlines numerical questions organized by module related to transmission lines, microwave networks, stripline calculations, arrays, and antennas, primarily sourced from the VTU model paper 21EC62. Each module contains specific problems requiring calculations of parameters such as characteristic impedance, propagation constant, and power delivered to receivers. The author notes the potential for additional questions from past papers and expresses intent to extract more data from those sources.

Numerical questions — module-wise (extracted from available papers; more can be

added when more PDFs are parsed)

Module 1 (Transmission lines, Smith chart, microwave sources)

1) A transmission line has the following parameters R=1.2 Ω/m, G=28 μmho/m, f=1
GHz, L=18 nH/m, C=0.06 pF/m.
Calculate:
a) characteristic impedance
b) attenuation constant
c) phase constant
d) wavelength
e) velocity of wave propagation.

2) Determine the input impedance of a 200 Ω line (3/8) wavelength long terminated
in a 100 Ω resistor. Using smith chart find the reflection coefficient.
(Source: VTU model paper 21EC62)

3) A microwave generator at 1.2 GHz supplies power to a microwave transmission line

having parameters R=0.8 Ω/m, G=0.8 m℧/m, L=0.01 μH/m, C=0.4 pF/m. Calculate (a)
Propagation constant (b) attenuation constant (c) Phase constant (d) Characteristic
impedance.

Module 2 (Microwave networks, S-parameters, attenuators)

4) (Attenuator / coupler numerical problems appear in past QPs — locate in detailed
last-year papers for exact numbers.)

Module 3 (Stripline / microstrip calculations, antenna effective aperture)

5) A lossless parallel strip line: substrate εr = 6, thickness d = 4 mm. Find the
width w for Z0 = 50 Ω; then find capacitance, inductance and phase velocity.
(Source: VTU model paper 21EC62)

6) Microstrip / parallel strip: A gold parallel strip line width = 20 mm;

dielectric εr = 2.25; thickness = 4 mm. Determine characteristic impedance and
phase velocity.
(Source: VTU model paper 21EC62)

7) Radio link power calculation:

A radio link has a 15 W transmitter connected to an antenna of effective
aperture 2.5 m^2 at 5 GHz. Receiving antenna aperture 0.5 m^2, distance = 15 km.
Assume lossless antennas. Find power delivered to receiver.

Module 4 (Arrays & radiation resistance)

8) Two isotropic point sources separated by λ/2, equal amplitude and phase. Obtain
the field pattern (numerical patterns may be required).
9) Derive array factor expressions — many past QPs ask for array factor and design-
related numericals (element spacing, beamwidth, etc).

Module 5 (Antennas — horn, loop, reflector)

10) Find length L, H-plane aperture and flare angles θE and θH of a pyramidal horn
for which E-plane aperture is 10 λ. Horn is fed by rectangular waveguide TE10.
Assume δ=0.2λ in E-plane and 0.375λ in H-plane. Also find beam widths and
directivity.
11) Calculate aperture of a dipole; calculate radiation resistance for
loop/circular loop — these appear as numerical variants across years.

Notes:
- I extracted module-wise numericals from the VTU model paper (21EC62) above. There
are many more numerical questions in the 17EC71 past papers (Aug 2021, Aug 2022,
Feb 2021, Jul 2023 etc). To extract every numerical from all years I will need to
fetch those PDFs and parse them similarly — I have located the download pages and
can parse them next (if you'd like me to continue).
