2. Re –read the prologue with your partner out loud, trading off every other line
(ex. person A read line 1, person B read line 2, person A read line 3, etc.).

3. The setting of the play is Verona. Draw a box around this word.

4. What is the relationship between the 2 households? *Star the lines that tell us
that these two families don’t get along. Next to these lines, explain them
in your own words.

Two rich and old families have an argument (fight) in their families for a long time. Only
the death of the children seems to end this argument.
 5. What do you think Shakespeare means by “fatal loins” (5)? You may need to
look up these words in the dictionary. Include your definition and explanation
next to line 5 above.

- Fatal means unavoidable disaster or failure

- Loins means the reproductive organs or lineage (for examples the child was
born from the loins of a great king).

Romeo and Juliet are born in two families who have an argument (fight), it is very
unlucky that they fell in love but can’t love each other because the families do not
like each other.

6. What does Shakespeare mean by “star-crossed lovers”?

Two people who care deeply for each other, however their love is doomed by the stars
and cannot be together.

This is the love of Romeo and Juliet.

7. What happens to the lovers? Underline the lines that give away the death of
Romeo and Juliet and explain in detail

The kids love each other but they are not allowed to love and they will die together. The
parents are connected because they are both sad about the loss of their children.

8. How do their parents impact their relationship? See lines 8-12.

The parents are connected to each other because they are both sad about the loss of
their children.

9. Put (parentheses) around the lines that explain why the feud between these two
families ends. Next to these lines, explain them in your own words.

With the death of their children they were not able to think about the rage of the
argument.

10. What does the chorus ask the audience to do in the last 2 lines? Why? -->Draw
an arrow next to the lines that tell the playgoers that what they missed in
the Prologue, they can find out later in the play.
The audience will hear that nothing else then the death of their children will stop their
argument.

Assignment 3:

1. Look up the definition of ‘climax in a story’.

The climax in a story is the most intense, exciting, or important moment, usually
the turning point of the narrative. It is the moment where the conflict reaches its peak
and the outcome is decided.

2. What do you think is the climax in Romeo&Juliet? Why?

When Romeo wanted to have a look when Juliet was lying in bed while pretending
to be dead Romeo decided to lay next to her. This was where everyone was very
silent in the class when watching the movie.

3. Mercutio’s death has a great impact in the unfolding of the story. How?

Because Mercutio’s has killed, other people are killing each other and Romoe has been
sent away. And then he could not see Juliet.

4. Would the story have played out differently if Mercutio had not been killed?
Explain.

Yess, because there would have been no revenge and Romeo would have been able to
see Juliet.

Assignment 5:

Rewrite a part of a scene in which death plays a role in modern English. You choose
between 15-20 lines and you choose the part yourself!

Romeo heard Juliet was dead but he did not know it was just sleeping.
He went to visit her in the church in secret.
He was so sad that he bought poison for himself, and hurried to Juliet.
But because he was banned from the city the police were chasing him.
Eventually, he arrived at the church where he closed himself and the police went away.
In the church, he saw candles and flowers and a bed with Juliet in it.
Romeo took her hand and cried a lot, he sang a song and he lay next to her.
He could not handle the pain of the loss of his love.
He drank poison so he could stay forever with her in heaven.
He died next to Juliet in the same bed.
Not much later Juliet woke up from her sleeping poison and was happy to see Romeo.
She tried to wake him up but she could not.
When she realized he was dead and saw poison lying next to him, she was so desperate
that she took her own life with the gun of Romeo.
Both Romeo and Juliet were dead next to each other in the same bed.
They are finally together.
