Challenges of TESOL Technology Standards & EFL Learners
As an EFL teacher, I find that one major challenge is balancing technology with pedagogy. Many
students rely too heavily on online dictionaries or translation software, which reduces their
critical thinking and problem-solving skills in English. Teachers must guide students to see
technology not only as a shortcut but also as a tool for deeper learning and meaningful
communication. Another challenge lies in students’ unequal digital skills and access. While some
adapt quickly, others struggle, which makes it harder to apply TESOL technology standards
consistently. For this reason, I believe teachers need to provide clear guidance and support so that
technology becomes a bridge to learning, rather than a barrier.

tools, become overly dependent on them, or fail to develop the critical skills needed for academic
and professional success.

Literacies as EFL Teachers
The role of a teacher challenges me when I plan a lesson to practice digital literacies for my
students. The first difficulty is classroom management. When using digital tools, many students
may be distracted by social media, games, or other online activities. It is not easy for the teacher
to keep everyone focused on the lesson, and this can reduce the effectiveness of the training.
Another challenge is the imbalance in students’ digital skills. Some learners are very confident
with technology, while others still struggle with basic operations. This gap makes it difficult to
design tasks that are suitable for all students at the same time. The teacher must find a balance
between supporting weaker students and keeping advanced students engaged. In short, classroom
management and unequal digital levels are two major barriers that make planning a digital
literacy lesson quite challenging.
Literacies as EFL Learners
As an EFL learner, I realize that digital literacies play an important role in my learning process.
At present, I am quite good at using basic applications such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
These tools are familiar to me because I often use Word to write essays and PowerPoint to
prepare class presentations. They help me organize my ideas clearly and improve my writing and
speaking skills in English. However, I know that I need to improve my ability in Excel. Unlike
Word or PowerPoint, Excel requires more technical knowledge, such as formulas and data
analysis, which I am not confident with yet. If I can develop this skill, I will be able to manage
information better and apply it to academic tasks or research projects. Finally, I think I need to
focus on developing my literacy in using AI tools. Artificial Intelligence is becoming an essential
part of education, and it can support me in practicing English, generating ideas, and learning
more efficiently.
