Understanding Basic Probability Concepts

Probability is a mathematical field that quantifies the likelihood of events occurring and is applicable in various domains. Key concepts include experiments, outcomes, sample spaces, and events, with a fundamental formula for calculating probability. There are different types of probability: theoretical, experimental, and subjective, all of which aid in making informed decisions under uncertainty.

Introduction to Probability

Probability is a branch of mathematics that deals with the likelihood or chance of an event
occurring. It is used in many fields such as science, games, weather forecasting, finance and data
analysis.

Basic Terms
Experiment: An action with an uncertain result (e.g. tossing a coin).
Outcome: A possible result of an experiment.
Sample Space (S): The set of all possible outcomes.
Event: A subset of the sample space.

Formula
Probability of an event A is given by:
P(A) = Number of favorable outcomes / Total number of possible outcomes

Examples
1. Tossing a fair coin: S = {H, T}. Probability of Head = 1/2.
2. Rolling a die: S = {1,2,3,4,5,6}. Probability of getting 3 = 1/6.

Types of Probability
Theoretical Probability – based on reasoning.
Experimental Probability – based on experiments.
Subjective Probability – based on personal judgment.

Conclusion
Probability helps us make predictions and decisions in uncertain situations.
