Asphalt Mixture Design Methods

The document outlines the structural design principles for asphalt mixtures in highways and airports engineering, focusing on the properties and specifications of asphalt. It includes examples using the Marshall method to determine the optimum asphalt content based on stability, flow, and volumetric properties. Key calculations and results for different asphalt content percentages are provided to illustrate the design process.

Example 2:

Determine the optimum asphalt content of the hot asphaltic concrete mixture if the
results obtained using the Marshall method are shown in the following table. The
specific gravity of the asphalt is 1.02. The average effective specific gravity of
aggregate is 2.8.

Wagg . + Wasph. (0.97  1230) + (0.03  1230) 1230

Gt = = = = 2.66 gm / cm3
Wagg . Wasph. 0.97  1230 0.03  1230 426.11 + 36.18
+ +
Gagg . Gasph. 2.8 1.02

1230
Gm = = 2.48 gm / cm3
1230 − 735

(2.66 − 2.48)
AV =  100 = 6.77%
2.66

36.9
Vasph. = 1.02  100 = 7.29%
1230
2.48

VMA = 6.77 + 7.29 = 14.06%

Case 2:

Wagg . + Wasph. 1240

Gt = = = 2.62 gm / cm3
Wagg . Wasph. 425.14 + 48.63

Gagg . Gasph.

2.62

49.6
Vasph. = 1.02  100 = 9.84%
1240
2.51

VMA = 4.2 + 9.84 = 14.04%

Case 3:
Wagg . + Wasph. 1250
Gt = = = 2.58 gm / cm3
Wagg . Wasph. 424.11 + 61.27

Gagg . Gasph.

2.58

Vasph. = 1.02  100 = 12.4%
1250
2.53

VMA = 1.94 + 12.4 = 14.34%

Case 4:
Wagg . + Wasph. 1260
Gt = = = 2.53gm / cm3
Wagg . Wasph. 423 + 74.12
+
Gagg . Gasph.
1260
Gm = = 2.5 gm / cm3
