ASPEN Plus Homework: Flow Sheet Analysis

The document outlines Homework 1 for CME 455, requiring the creation of a flow sheet in ASPEN Plus with specified feed conditions and results to be reported. Key results include heat duties, outlet flow rates, viscosity, and mass density, along with modifications to a flash vessel. Additionally, it provides feedback on four Process Flow Diagrams, highlighting missing information and necessary improvements.

Fall 2025

Homework 1
50 pts
Submit a Word file with the answers and an ASPEN file (.apw or .bkp)

V-201

8. [10 points] For each of the four Process Flow Diagrams below (A – D), indicate any
missing information, mistakes or improvements that should be made to complete the PFD
according to the requirements presented during lecture. Note, these PFDs submissions
from previous design projects.

 Each unit is not identified individually on the top/bottom of the diagram.

 The utilities (heaters/coolers) are not indicated on the heating/cooling units.
 Place the unit names closer to the units for clarity, especially on the pumps and
reflux drums around the distillation columns.

B
 An indication of the utility of E-100 is missing.
 The equipment included with the distillation columns (condenser, reflux pumps,
reflux drums) are missing from T-102, T-101, and T-100.

C
 An indication of the heating/cooling utilities of heaters is missing from the heating
units.
 The distillation columns B-102 and B-101 are not labeled with the proper U-XXX
convention for the auxiliary equipment for the distillation columns (condensers,
reflux drums and reflux pumps).
 For clarity, some of the unit labels could be placed inside the unit image.
 Expand the diagram to feel less condensed and allow the stream numbers to fit in
the diamond.
 Indicate where the recycled stream is coming from at the top into M-101.

D
 Each unit is not identified individually on the top/bottom of the diagram.
 The streams are not all numbered in a consistent manner. Some are just numbers,
and some have a letter associated with them.
 The units are not labeled with the proper U-XXX naming convention.
 The auxiliary equipment off the distillation columns is not labeled/included
(condenser, reflux drum, and reflux pump).
 The utilities aren’t labeled properly on any heating/cooling units.
 For clarity, remove the values and units associated with some outlet stream and
equipment such as heaters.
