Grade9 Linear Equation

Important Definitions:
Equation: Is an algebraic sentence with an equal sign.
Ex: 2x + 3 = 5

Expression: Is and algebraic sentence with no equal sign.

Ex: 2x + 5

Variable: Is an unknown number represented mostly by alphabets (x, y , z , n , a

, b , …….)

Linear equation: Is a first-degree equation which contain two variables of first

degree (with no power sign) and represented by y=mx+c or a line in graphs.
EX: y = 2x +3

First degree equation: is an equation which contains one or more variables of

first degree (with no power sign).
Ex: 2x – 3y = 5

Second degree equation: is an equation with one or more variables of second

degree (to the power two).
𝑦2+ x = 3
