RELIANCE INDUSTRIES LTD.

Overview
Founded in 1958 (67 years ago) by Dhirubhai Ambani
Reliance Industries Limited is the most valuable company in
India by market capitalization (Market Cap. ~ 21 Lakh Crore)
Reliance Industries operates across multiple sectors
including Oil-to-Chemicals, Retail, Telecom & Digital
Services, Media, and New Energy
Reliance contributes significantly to India’s GDP and
industrial development
JAMNAGAR REFINERY

Commissioned in 1999, the Reliance Jamnagar Refinery is one of the most

advanced refining complexes in the world
It has a massive refining capacity of 1.4 million barrels per day, making it the
largest refinery complex globally
The refinery is spread over an area of more than 7,500 acres, making it the
largest refining site in a single location
It has the highest complexity index (21.1) in the world, enabling it to process
heavy and low-quality crude into high-value products.
PROFIT LOSS STATEMENT
JAMNAGAR REFINERY

Gasification complex :
Gasification occurs at very high temperatures
(above 1,200°C) in the presence of steam and
oxygen, converting solid petcoke into a clean
combustible gas.

Hot candle filters are used to remove ash and fine

particles from the hot syngas before it is sent for
further processing.

Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) :

The Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) at Reliance Jamnagar is designed to process a
wide range of crude oils, including heavy and high-sulfur crudes, as part of its
high-complexity refining configuration
Modern CDU operations at Reliance are controlled using Advanced Process
Control (APC) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS) to maximize cut-point
accuracy and product yield
Pumparounds and side strippers are used to improve heat recovery and increase
separation efficiency, reducing the overall energy demand of the unit by 10–15%

FCC
[Link] Conversion Unit:
Converts Low value VGO into high
value products like naphtha, LPG
and light olefins.

[Link] conversion and

regeneration:
The reactore and regenerator pair
helps keeps supply of active
catalyst while also supplying heat
for the endothermic reactions
JAMNAGAR REFINERY

Hydrotreating Units
[Link] heteroatoms:
Hydrotreating removes impurities like
sulfur, nitrogen, metals, and oxygen
from petroleum streams by reacting
them with hydrogen over a catalyst.

[Link] streams use dedicated

hydrotreaters:
Refineries have separate hydrotreaters
for naphtha, kerosene, diesel, and VGO
because each stream has different
impurities, reaction severities, and
catalyst requirements.
JAMNAGAR REFINERY

Coker Unit
The coker unit thermally cracks the heaviest refinery residues (like vacuum residue) into
lighter products such as naphtha, diesel, and gas oils, while producing petroleum coke as
a solid by-product.
JAMNAGAR REFINERY

AROMATICS COMPLEX
The Aromatics unit receives three types of
naphtha:
Straight-run naphtha from CDU
Hydrotreated coker naphtha
Hydrotreated FCC naphtha

Paraxylene capacity is 4.6 MMTPA

Benzene capacity is 1.4 MMTPA

3rd largest producer of Paraxylene (PX) in the world

JAMNAGAR REFINERY

POLYPROPYLENE UNIT
The primary feed for PP is propylene, which
comes from:
The FCC unit
The ROGC (Refinery Off-Gas Cracker)

Ethylene capacity of 1.7 MMTPA

Catalyst - Ziegler-Natta or metallocene
