COURSE 3: Skill Development for Job Readiness
Project: Incentive Imbalance: Addressing Disruptions and Ensuring Fairness in Rider Motivation at Big
Basket's Chandigarh Stores
Problem Statement
As the Cluster Manager of Big Basket for a region based in Chandigarh, overseeing a total of five stores within the area.
This week, you implemented a change in the incentive structure for one of the stores, aiming to improve performance and
motivate the riders. The revised incentive plan was designed to reward riders who work longer hours with higher rewards
for achieving Tier 4 and Tier 5 incentives.
However, this change has created some unforeseen challenges. For riders who typically log fewer hours, achieving the
Tier 4 and Tier 5 incentives has become significantly more difficult, as these riders are now unable to meet the new
targets. On the other hand, riders who consistently login for more hours are finding the incentive structure much more
rewarding, leading to a rise in competition among them for higher rewards.
The situation has escalated, with some riders at this particular store feeling frustrated by the changes, and as a result,
they have begun creating disruptions. They are preventing other riders—who were previously supposed to benefit from
the incentive changes—from being able to work efficiently.
As the Cluster Manager, you now need to address this issue promptly and effectively. Your challenge is to find a way to
balance the needs of all riders, ensure fair access to the incentive rewards, and restore a positive working atmosphere at
the store, all while keeping the broader goals of improved rider performance and store productivity intact.
