Statistical Hypothesis Testing Exam

The document contains a series of statistical questions related to hypothesis testing, market share analysis, and the effectiveness of product literature. It includes various scenarios involving consumer satisfaction ratings, unemployment claims, market share changes, online shopping behavior, voting preferences, and ANOVA analysis. Each question requires the application of statistical methods at specified significance levels to draw conclusions from the provided data.

Sample test (OLD EXAM)

Question 1: A company has conducted a consumer satisfaction study for a new

product by collecting (a simple random sample of) answers from 25
consumers. The average satisfaction rating (in a certain scale) obtained from
this sample has been 4.5, with a sample variance of 1.5. We assume that
these ratings follow a normal distribution. A second sample composed of 37
consumer interviews in a different geographic market has yielded an
average satisfaction rating
of 5.3 with a sample variance of 1.9. We also assume this is a simple random
sample, that these satisfaction ratings follow a normal distribution and are
independent from those of the original sample, and
that the variances for both populations are the same. You are asked to
conduct a hypothesis test at a 1% significance level to determine if the
average satisfaction in the second area is significantly larger than that in
the initial area. What is your conclusion?
Question 2: A mayor in a large city claims that in one particularly depressed
neighborhood,
at least 20% of all males between ages 18 and 65 are unemployed. A
random sample of 120 people from this population included 20 unemployed.
a. Test the mayor’s claim at a 5% significance level.
b. Calculate the power of the test for p =0.12.
Question 3: The table below shows the 2018 market share of five companies
that manufacture a particular device. A marketing analyst wonders if market
share has changed since 2018. He interviews 200 of his customers. The last
column of the table shows the number of customers who recently purchased
devices from each company.
Compa Market Recent
ny Share Customers
1 0.40 70
2 0.32 60
3 0.24 54
4 0.02 10
5 0.02 6
Use α = 0.05 to test if the market shares have changed since 2018.
Question 4: The proportion of males who regularly shop online, according to
an expert, is higher than the proportion of women. Compared to 600 of the
1000 women surveyed, 400 of the 600 males the analyst polled stated they
usually make internet purchases. At the 5% significance level, evaluate the
analyst’s assertion. Find the p-value of the test?
Question 5: Following a presidential debate, people were asked how they might vote in the
forthcoming election. Is there any association between one’s gender and choice of
presidential candidate?
Gender
Candidate Male Female
Preference
Candidate A 320 280
Candidate B 180 220

Question 6: A sales manager is interested in evaluating the effectiveness of product literature.

There are five different types of brochures currently in use. He asks four salespeople in each of
the four regions of the country to evaluate the effectiveness of each of the brochures. The results
of a two-way ANOVA are presented below.

Source of Sum of
Variation Squares
Region of country 36.40
Brochure type 13.40
Interaction 31.32
Error 125.2
Assume Normal distribution and equal variance.
a. Complete the ANOVA table
b. Test for effect Region, Brochure type and interaction between them (specify the hypothesis
clearly, using 5% level of significance)

Question 7: Let X1; : : : ; Xn be a random sample from the binomial distribution

b(N; θ)
with θ 2 (0; 1):
(i) Find the maximum likelihood estimator of θ: [5 marks]
(ii) Let X1; : : : ; Xn be a random sample from b(3; θ): If this sample gave
the following measurements:
x1 = 3 x2 = 0 x3 = 1 x4 = 2 x5 = 1
find the maximum likelihood estimator of P (X = 0)
