INTRODUCTION
Chicken rearing is one of the most common and important agricultural activities practiced in
both rural and urban areas. It the keeping and management of chicken for the purpose of
producing meat, eggs, and are highly nutritious. The project aimed to equip learners with
practical skills and knowledge in poultry management.
The choice of chicken rearing was based on its economic value and the fact that chicken rearing
requires relatively low capital investment, mature quickly and provide reliable source of income.
Therefore, this project intended to demonstrate proper practices in chicken rearing as way of
promoting food security, self-reliance and income generation.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
1. Development of skills from the knowledge of rearing domestic animals and also theoretical
application from children rearing.
2. Actualizing the knowledge about marketing and financing for the future ventures
3. Supply of eggs and white meat to the college fraternity.
4. Public participation skills.
5. Community awareness on poultry farming.
6. Sustainable development goals ensuring sufficient supply of white meat which will ensure
that the community is prevented from disease caused by red meat.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES
For the achievement and succession of project was duly guided with different phases(milestone)
as follows:
1. Need assessment and feasibility study -We identified the demand for chicken products like
eggs and meat. We also assessed local resources, market potential, land availability, climate
and risks.
2. Business plan -We drafted goals and objectives and step by step plan. We also included
market strategy, production plan, Financial production and risk management to help attract
funding.
3. Resource mobilization and budget allocation -We secured funding through saving, loans
and grants. We allocated budget for construction Feeding program, vaccination, labour
required and chicks. We also ensured proper financial plan for each phase.
4. Construction of structures and sourcing chicks –We constructed the houses and ensured
that they are well ventilated proper lighting, Feeders and drinkers were accurately placed. We
ensured that the house is secure and also included security and hygiene .We purchased
healthy chicks from a certified hatchery.
5. Brooding and chicken management-In the brooding and chicken management we carried
out different management practice. They include:
Providing water -This is to ensure that the chickens don’t get stress.
Providing and regulating heat -This is to ensure favour conditions. We ensured that the
chicks have enough and sufficient heat that serve them during cold times.
Feeding-We did this to boost the development and growth.
Providing bedding for chicks (0-4 weeks)-To enhance comfort
Vaccination-To prevent diseases attacks
Biosecurity measures-To ensure that no infections
Record keeping -This was to ensure that we trace the health and production record of
each bird
6. Chicken management- On daily care and management of chicken we ensured that we feed,
monitor and clean the houses. We maintained proper hygiene to avoid diseases. Observed
behavior and the cause of isolation of some birds from the rest.
7. Grower management-From 5-20 weeks we trans the chicks to grower feed. In doing this we
did it gradually to prevent stress to the chicks. We also adjusted space, Monitor weight gain
among them and prepared for the next production stage. We continued with vaccination.
8. Adult Grower management-we handled birds with focus and care to ensure proper
production.
9. Layering management –we set aside laying places to prevent eggs from breaking
10. Sales and marketing – we planned well on how we conduct marketing. First we identified
market or demand. We selected marketing method and criteria. We also distributed tasks
amongst ourselves ,We also lay out records required.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Economic empowerment through the sale of eggs and meat.
Development of entrepreneur skills in management, marketing and record keeping.
Provision of income to the college thereby improving livelihood
Solve the problem of malnutrition and food insecurity through egg and meat production.
Reduced mortality rates due to the effective health management.
Successful rearing –Raised healthy chicken from chicks to maturity.
Income generation -Earned money from selling mature chicken.
Skill development – Gained practical skills in feeding hygiene, vaccination and record keeping
improved knowledge understood poultry diseases and how to manage them.
Team work –Learned to work well with others during group activities.
Responsibility – Became more responsible through daily care routines.
Profit realization –Project made a small profit after expenses.
Community interest –Others showed interest in starting similar projects.
CHALLENGES EXPERIENCED
High risk of disease transmission
Required high initial capital to purchase chicks and required tools
Required daily attention for example feeding, cleaning and health monitoring.
Competition from large scale commercial poultry operators
Adverse weather conditions that changed drastically during the project
High mortality rate-Some chicks died during the first days after purchase due to climate change.
Feed costs -Quality poultry feed was expensive affecting the overall budget.
Diseases and health issues –Chicken showed signs of illness requiring urgent treatment.
Water shortage – Clean water was sometimes un available.
Predators –There were cases of predators like cats and dogs trying to access the coop.
Limited space – The chicken house was small limiting expansion.
Lack of experience –At the beginning handling and feeding techniques were challenging.
SOLUTIONS TO THE CHALLENGES
a) Vaccinating the chicks on time
b) Building well- structured house for the chicken
c) Providing a security light to prevent theft
d) Use of locally available chicken feed
e) Use of locally available materials to build the structures
f) Exchanging of daily duties to avoid boredom
g) We improved brooding area with proper heating and close monitoring.
h) We bought feed in bulk and mixed own feed using local materials.
i) We followed a strict vaccination and deworming schedule
j) We stored clean water in containers for consistent supply.
k) We strengthened the chicken coop and closed all openings.
l) We sought guidance from teacher farmers and online resources.
LESSONS LEARNT
Problem solving- challenges such as diseases, predators and food shortage encourage finding
practical solutions.
Team work and co- operation -Working with family classmates or community members
improves the project success.
Sustainability - Chicken manure can be used as fertilizer showing the importance of recycling
and eco-friendly practices.
Record keeping – Monitoring feed, growth and egg production helps in evaluating the progress.
Time management –Chicken need to be fed and checked at specific times, teaching the value of
proper planning.
Responsibility –Taking care of chicken requires commitment in feeding, cleaning, and
protecting them.
Chicken need proper care and attention to stay healthy
Cleanliness is important to prevent diseases
Planning and budgeting- They are key to a successful project.
Vaccination –This is important for disease prevention.
RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSIONASXS
For better results in chicken rearing we recommend that:
I. Farmers should construct proper chicken houses that are clean, well ventilated and
secure from predators .
II. Regular vaccination should be done to prevent diseases
III. The feeding should be balanced to promote healthy growth and higher egg production.
IV. Farmers should practice record keeping to track down expenses, growth rates and profits
V. Farmers should explore value addition such as selling dressed chicken to increase income
Education and support should be given to small scale farmers. In this regard, we conclude that
Chicken rearing is one of the most profitable and sustainable agricultural activities that provides
both food and income. From this project its evident that with proper care, feeding and disease
control , Chicken grow well and produces eggs and meat which is better for consumption and
commercial purposes The project demonstrated a good housing method , Proper hygiene , and ,
and record keeping for successful poultry farming .
