Question 1 (4 × 2 = 8 marks)
⃗ = 6î − 8ĵ.
1. Find the magnitude of the vector A (2)
2. If two vectors have magnitudes 5 units and 12 units and are perpendicular to each
other, find the magnitude of their resultant. (2)
3. Find the value of k if the vectors (2î + 3ĵ) and (4î + k ĵ) are perpendicular. (2)

Question 2 (3 × 4 = 12 marks)
⃗ and B
1. Two vectors A ⃗ have magnitudes 10 units and 6 units respectively. The angle
⃗ =A
between them is 120◦ . Find the magnitude of the resultant vector R ⃗ + B.
⃗ (4)
2. A force of 20 N acts along the positive x-axis and another force of 15 N acts along
the positive y-axis. Find:
(a) the magnitude of the resultant force,
1
(b) the direction of the resultant force.
(4)
3. The displacement of a particle is given by
⃗r = (4t2 )î + (3t)ĵ,
where t is time in seconds. Find the magnitude of displacement at t = 2 s. (4)

Question 3 (2 × 6 = 12 marks)
⃗ = 5î + 12ĵ and B
1. Given A ⃗ = −7î + 24ĵ, find:
⃗ and B,
(a) the magnitude of A ⃗
⃗ · B,
(b) the scalar product A ⃗
(c) the angle between the two vectors.
(6)
2. A particle moves 10 m towards east, then 10 m towards north, and finally 5 m
towards west. Find:
(a) the resultant displacement,
(b) the direction of the resultant displacement with respect to east.

Section D
(Very Long Answer Numerical)
Question 4 (8 marks)
Three forces act at a point:
• F1 = 10 N along the positive x-axis,
• F2 = 15 N at an angle of 60◦ above the x-axis,
• F3 = 20 N acting vertically downward.
2
Calculate:
1. the x and y components of each force,
2. the magnitude of the resultant force,
3. the direction of the resultant force with respect to the x-axis.
