General Writing Sample Task 1 #85
You have decided to leave your current job and look for a new one.
Write a letter to a friend. In your letter
explain why you want to leave your current job
describe what kind of job you are looking for
ask for some help or advice
Write at least 150 words.
Dear Jhun,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you I will quit to my job in 21 grand
magazine street in Aragon company like a cleaner.
You may already know that I was studying big data analytics program in Lambton college
and applying for IT jobs in Toronto. Let me explain what happened. I got an interview with
Deloitte company, one of the biggest consultant companies in North America, they like
my background and my previous experience like a data analyst junior in Mexico City, so
they accepted me in a similar position I had before.
I wanted to ask if you could ask your Philippines coworker at your evening job if he could
replace me, because I will not continue working next week in Aragon company. I
remember you told me your friend was looking for a job in the mornings.
Write back when you can. I really want to hear your thoughts.
Best wishes,
Brian Martinez.
🧾 Estimated Band Score: 5.5 – 6.0
🔍 1. Task Achievement – 6.0
You answered all 3 bullet points:
✔️Why you want to leave your current job
✔️What kind of job you are looking for
✔️Asking for help
BUT:
❌ Your story sounds unrealistic (Deloitte hiring instantly, “quit to my job”).
❌ Some details aren’t appropriate for a friendly letter (too formal or unclear).
❌ The explanation jumps too fast.
🔗 2. Coherence & Cohesion – 6.0
✔️Paragraphs are logical
❌ Some sentences run too long
❌ Missing linking words (because, actually, as you know, recently, by the way, anyway)
❌ Some ideas need smoother transitions
3. Lexical Resource – 5.5
Good vocabulary about work, but:
❌ “quit to my job” ❌ incorrect
❌ “like a cleaner” → should be as a cleaner
❌ “Philippines coworker” → incorrect; should be Filipino coworker
❌ “they like my background” → too informal; should be they liked my background
❌ “I remember you told me your friend” → needs a connector (e.g., that)
🧩 4. Grammar – 5.5
Frequent mistakes:
“I will quit to my job” → I will quit my job
“in 21 grand magazine street” → at 21 Grand Magazine Street
“like a cleaner” → as a cleaner
wrong verb tenses
missing articles
These errors reduce accuracy.

✍️Corrected Version (Band 6.5 – 7) Using my ideas.
Dear Jhun,
I hope you’re doing well. I wanted to let you know that I’ve decided to quit my job at the
Aragon Company, where I currently work as a cleaner. It has been a stable job, but it
doesn’t match my long-term goals.
As you know, I’ve been studying Big Data Analytics at Lambton College and applying for
IT positions in Toronto. Recently, I had an interview with Deloitte, and they were very
interested in my previous experience as a junior data analyst in Mexico City. Fortunately,
they offered me a position similar to the one I had before, so I will be starting there next
week.
I wanted to ask for your help. Do you think you could check with your Filipino coworker
from your evening job? You mentioned he was looking for morning work, so he might be
interested in replacing me.
Write back when you have time—I’d really appreciate your advice.
Best wishes,
Brian Martinez

🌟 Model Answer (Band 6.5 – 7.0) Original example
Dear Jhun,
I hope everything is going well for you. I’m writing because I’ve decided to leave my
current position at the café. Although I’ve learned a lot there, the schedule has become
very demanding, and the workload has increased a lot over the past few months. I feel
exhausted most of the time, and I don’t have enough energy to focus on my future goals.
I’ve been thinking seriously about changing careers. Ideally, I’m looking for a full-time
administrative job or something related to customer service, preferably with regular
working hours. I would really like a role that allows me to use my communication skills
and gives me the chance to grow professionally.
Since you know many people in the area, I was wondering if you could let me know if you
hear about any job openings that might suit me. Any suggestions or advice would be a
huge help right now.
Thanks so much, and write back when you can.
Best wishes,
Brian

Dear Luca,
I am writing to let you know about my current job situation, hoping that you can give me
some advice. I have decided to leave my current position at the Swaneset Company. I
have worked there for several years now, and I think I have advanced as far as possible
in this company. I would like to work at a larger company where there are more
opportunities for advancement.
As you know, my most recent position at Swaneset has been as a software engineer in
the IT Department. I have learned a great deal about this type of work and am very
interested in it. I am hoping to find a similar sort of position at a larger company. I do not
mind starting at a new company at the same level as I am working at now, as long as I
feel there are good opportunities to move up before too long.
Since you have a lot of experience in this field, I was hoping that you could help me
identify some companies that might be a good fit for me. I would also appreciate some
help with my resume, if you do not mind my asking. I hope to hear from you soon.
Your friend,
John
