What Are Conjunctions?

Conjunctions are words used to join two verbs, two nouns, two adjectives, two phrases, or
two independent clauses.

There are seven coordinating conjunctions in English (FANBOYS):

F – for: shows cause and effect

A – and: joins related ideas

N – nor: joins two negative ideas

B – but: shows contrast

O – or: shows choices

Y – yet: shows contrast

S – so: shows cause and effect

What Is a Simple Sentence?

A simple sentence has a subject and only one verb.

Examples:

The girl sprinted after the tiger.

The cat purred.

What Is a Compound Sentence?

A compound sentence joins two main clauses using a conjunction (and, but, so, or).

Examples:

I like bananas and I like grapes.

Zoe can be rude, but she is a nice girl.

Exercise 1: Coordinating Conjunctions

1. It was raining, and we still had fun.

2. I could not go into the store, for it was closed.

3. She was quite sleepy, yet she continued to study.
