38: Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:
Plants have two main types of tissues: meristematic tissue (which helps in growth) and permanent tissue
(which performs specialized functions). Meristematic tissue is found at the tips of roots and shoots and
allows the plant to grow in length. It also occurs at the base of leaves in some plants, allowing regrowth.
Once meristematic cells divide, they differentiate and form permanent tissues that perform different
functions. For example, parenchyma stores food, collenchyma provides flexibility, and sclerenchyma
gives strength.

ii. How does meristematic tissue differ from permanent tissue?
iii. Why does cutting the tip of a plant shoot stop its growth?
39. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:
A group of children tries to push a wooden box on a rough floor. At first, they push the box
lightly, but it does not move due to friction opposing their force. When they increase their effort,
the box remains stationary as the frictional force balances the applied force. Finally, they push
harder, and the box starts moving, indicating that an unbalanced force is acting on it.
i. What type of force is preventing the box from moving when a small force is applied?
ii. Explain why the box starts moving when the children push harder.
iii. How does this scenario relate to Newton’s First Law of Motion?

Assertion–Reason (17–20)
17. Option (B) is correct.
Explanation: Water exists in three states (true). High boiling point is true, but it is not the
complete reason for all three states.
18. Option (A) is correct.
Explanation: Unicellular organisms can survive independently because a single cell performs all
life processes.
19. Option (A) is correct.
Explanation: Momentum has magnitude and direction, so it is a vector quantity.
20. Option (A) is correct.
Explanation: Weeds reduce crop yield because they compete for nutrients, water, space and light.
SECTION B (Q21–Q26)
21. (a) Valency of X = 3

often behave as non-metals).
OR

W = F × s (force × displacement in direction of force)
SI unit: Joule (J)
22. The chicken kept in moderate light will produce more eggs.

SCIENCE (086)
25. Power = 120 W = 0.12 kW
Daily use = 6 h
Energy per day = 0.12 × 6 = 0.72 kWh = 0.72 unit
In 30 days = 0.72 × 30 = 21.6 units
Bill = 21.6 × 2.50 = ₹54.00
26. The box with the thinnest/smallest handle is harder to lift.
Reason: Smaller contact area increases pressure on the hand, making it feel heavier to lift.
All boxes have the same weight because mass is same.
SECTION C (Q27–Q33)
27. The path of light becomes visible when it passes through a colloidal solution because light gets scattered by
colloidal particles.
Phenomenon: Tyndall effect.
28. (a) Liquid metal: Mercury
(b) Liquid non-metal: Bromine
(c) Two gaseous non-metals: Hydrogen and Nitrogen
OR
Canal rays are positively charged rays produced in a discharge tube under low pressure.
They contain positively charged particles (protons).
Discovered by E. Goldstein.

30. Bone and cartilage belong to connective tissue.
Bone: Hard, rigid matrix with calcium salts; provides support and protection.
Cartilage: Flexible and elastic; smoothens joints and provides support where flexibility is needed.
31. If air resistance is considered: crumpled paper reaches first.
Reason: Flat sheet has larger surface area, so greater air resistance slows it down; crumpled sheet
experiences less air resistance.
32. (a)
(i) Stone has more inertia (greater mass).
(ii) Box filled with clothes has more inertia (greater mass).
(b)
(i) Leaves fall because branch moves suddenly but leaves tend to remain at rest due to inertia, so they
get detached.
(ii) Luggage is tied because during sudden start/stop it tends to maintain its state of motion/rest due to
inertia and may fall.
33. For distinct echo, time gap must be at least 0.1 s.
Distance travelled by sound in 0.1 s = 340 × 0.1 = 34 m
This is total to-and-fro distance, so minimum distance from reflector = 34/2 = 17 m
SECTION D (Q34–Q36)
34. Isotopes of hydrogen:
Protium: 1H1 (1 proton, 0 neutron)
Deuterium: 2H1 (1 proton, 1 neutron)
Tritium: 3H1 (1 proton, 2 neutrons)
OR
Melting point is the temperature at which a solid changes into liquid at atmospheric pressure.
During melting, temperature remains constant because the heat supplied is used as latent heat to overcome
intermolecular forces, not to increase temperature.
35. Raisins in plain water swell because water enters them by endosmosis (outside solution is hypotonic).
Raisins in concentrated sugar solution shrink because water moves out by exosmosis (outside solution is
hypertonic).
Shrinkage of protoplasm is called plasmolysis.
Hypotonic solution: solution having lower solute concentration than cell sap.
OR (locations)
(a) Squamous epithelium: lining of mouth / oesophagus / alveoli (any one)
(b) Cuboidal epithelium: kidney tubules / ducts of glands
(c) Adipose tissue: below skin / around organs
(d) Striated muscle: limbs / tongue (any one)

36. We draw perpendicular lines from the 10-minute point and the 30-minute point to the time-axis
(fig.). The distance covered is equal to the area of the rectangle ABCD. Its value is:
ABCD = (30 min − 10 min) × (10 km/h)
= 20 min × 10 km/h
= 20/60 h × 10 km/h
= 10/3 km
SECTION E (Q37–Q39)
37. (1) At –150°C: Substance – 4 will be in the liquid state.
At –100°C: Substance – 4 will be in the gaseous state.
Melting Point of Substance 4 = -169°C:
At temperatures above -169°C, the substance is no longer solid and becomes a liquid.
Boiling Point of Substance 4 = -104°C:
At temperatures above -104°C, the substance is no longer liquid and becomes a gas.
At -150°C, the temperature is above the melting point (-169°C) but below the boiling point (-104°C),
so Substance 4 is a liquid.
At -100°C, the temperature is above both the melting point (-169°C) and the boiling point (-104°C),
so Substance 4 is a gas.
(2) Substance – 1:
The physical state cannot be determined solely based on the information that it is brittle.
However, substances that are brittle are often solids at room temperature.
Substance – 3: Solid.
Substance – 1: Brittle substances are typically solid (e.g., certain metals, minerals, and salts).
Substance – 3: With a high melting point of 800°C,
it will be in the solid state at room temperature (~25°C).
(3) It will be in a liquid state.
The melting point of Substance – 2 is 5°C, and its boiling point is 150°C. Therefore, at 100°C, Substance – 2
will be in the liquid state.
(4) Substance 3 has strongest forces of attraction. The strength of the force of attraction between particles can
be inferred from the melting point. Substance – 3 has the highest melting point (800°C), indicating that it has
the strongest force of attraction between its particles.

(38)(i) The apical meristem is found at the tips of roots and shoots of plants.
(ii) Difference between meristematic tissue and permanent tissue:
Meristematic tissue consists of cells that divide continuously and help in the growth of the plant, whereas
permanent tissue consists of cells that do not divide and perform specific functions such as storage,
support, and transport.
(iii) Cutting the tip of a plant shoot stops its growth because the apical meristem is removed, which is
responsible for the increase in length of the plant.
(39) i. The force preventing the motion of the box is friction, which acts in the opposite direction of
the applied force.
ii. The box starts moving because when the applied force becomes greater than the force of friction,
there is an unbalanced force acting on the box, which changes its state of rest to motion.
iii. This scenario illustrates Newton’s First Law of Motion, which states that an object remains in its
state of rest or uniform motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced external force. Initially, the
forces were balanced, but once the applied force exceeded friction, motion began.
