ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to express my sincere
gratitude to my Biology teacher for
guiding me throughout the completion of
this project. I am also thankful to my
parents and friends for their support and
encouragement. This project has helped
me to understand the causes, symptoms,
prevention, and treatment of Sexually
Transmitted Diseases in a clear and
informative manner.

INTRODUCTION
Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs),
also known as Sexually Transmitted
Infections (STIs), are infections that are
primarily spread through sexual contact.
These diseases are a major public health
concern worldwide and can affect
individuals of all age groups. Proper
knowledge, awareness, and preventive
measures are essential to control their
spread.
2. WHAT ARE SEXUALLY
TRANSMITTED
DISEASES?
Sexually Transmitted Diseases are
infections that are transmitted from one
person to another mainly through sexual
activities such as vaginal, anal, or oral
sex. Some STDs can also spread through
blood transfusion, sharing needles, or
from mother to child during pregnancy or
childbirth.
3. CAUSES OF STDs
STDs are caused by different types of
microorganisms such as:
Bacteria (e.g., Gonorrhea, Syphilis)
Viruses (e.g., HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B,
Herpes)
Protozoa (e.g., Trichomoniasis)
Parasites (e.g., Pubic lice)

4. TYPES OF SEXUALLY
TRANSMITTED DISEASES
Some common STDs are:
1. HIV/AIDS
Caused by Human Immunodeficiency
Virus (HIV)
Weakens the immune system
No permanent cure, but controlled by
antiretroviral therapy
Gonorrhea
Bacterial infection
Affects reproductive tract
Curable with antibiotics
3. Syphilis
Bacterial disease
Occurs in stages
Curable in early stages
4. Genital Herpes
Viral infection
Causes painful blisters
No permanent cure
5. Hepatitis B
Viral infection affecting the liver
Preventable by vaccination
5. SYMPTOMS OF STDs
Symptoms may vary and sometimes may
not appear immediately. Common
symptoms include:
Unusual discharge from genital organs
Pain during urination
Sores or blisters around genitals
Itching or irritation
Fever and fatigue

6. TRANSMISSION OF STDs
STDs can spread through:
Unprotected sexual intercourse
Sharing infected needles
Blood transfusion with infected blood
From infected mother to baby
7. PREVENTION OF STDs
Preventive measures include:
Practicing safe sex (use of condoms)
Having a single faithful partner
Avoiding sharing needles
Regular medical check-ups
Vaccination (e.g., Hepatitis B)
8. DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
Early diagnosis helps in effective
treatment. STDs are diagnosed using
blood tests, urine tests, or physical
examination. Bacterial STDs can be cured
with antibiotics, while viral STDs can be
managed with proper medication.
9. SOCIAL AWARENESS AND
IMPORTANCE
Spreading awareness about STDs is
essential to reduce stigma and encourage
early treatment. Education programs and
health campaigns play an important role in
preventing the spread of STDs.
10. CONCLUSION
Sexually Transmitted Diseases are
serious health issues but can be
prevented with proper knowledge,
awareness, and responsible behavior.
Early diagnosis and timely treatment can
save lives and improve overall health.
