29. Case Study based Question: (4)
lt was a rainy afternoon in the school chemistry lab. Prahlad and Arjun were helping
their
teacher prepare for a practical demonstration. On the table lay four small samples of
metals-sodium, magnesium, iron, and copper.
The teacher smiled and said, "Let's see how these metals behave with water. But remem
ber,
not all metals are equally reactive."
• First, she carefully took a tiny piece of sodium from a bottle stored under kerosene.
As soon as it was dropped into a beaker of water, it darted around on the surface,
fizzing vigorously, "Look!" exclaimed Riya, "It's releasing hydrogen gas!" A small
flame appeared due to the heat of the reaction.
• Next, the teacher placed a ribbon of magnesium ?nto cold water. Nothing much
happened. Arjun frowned, "Is it not reacting?" The teacher replied, "Magnesium
needs hot water to react. Let's heat the water." Soon, bubbles of hydrogen appeared.
• Then came iron. It didn't react with cold or hot water. But when steam was passed
over red-hot iron filings, it reacted.
• Finally, the teacher placed copper in water. Nothing happened at all. A1jun noted,
"So copper is the least reactive among all these metals."The teacher concluded,
"Now you've seen that the reactivity of metats with water decreases down the
reactivity series."
• Questions:
a) Why is sodium stored under kerosene and not in water?
b) Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction of iron with steam.
c) Arrange copper, magnesium, sodium , and iron in an increasing order of reactivity.
d) Give reason: Calcium starts floating when it reacts with water.
