Advanced Planning & Controls Self-Paced Course
Module 1: Advanced Primavera P6 Scheduling (3–
4 weeks)
Topics: 1. Critical Path vs Longest Path, Multiple Critical Paths, Total Float vs Free Float, Negative Float,
Open-Ended Activities 2. Retained Logic vs Progress Override, Expected Finish Dates, Progress Override
Actual Dates, Open-Ended Activity Critical Option 3. Multiple Float Paths (Total vs Free Float, Path
Prioritization) 4. Calendars & Lags (Predecessor, Successor, Relationship Calendars, Multi-Shift/Trade
Calendars) 5. Resource Management (Leveling vs Smoothing, Multi-Project Resource Pools) 6. Progress
Updates & Look-Ahead (Out-of-Sequence Progress, Weekly Reporting, Updating Actuals)
Practical Exercises: - Create mega-project dummy schedule with 3+ workstreams - Identify critical &
near-critical paths - Simulate resource over-allocation and leveling - Perform out-of-sequence updates
Module 2: Recovery & Revised Schedules (2
weeks)
Topics: 1. Recovery Scheduling Concepts (Baseline vs Recovery, Accelerated Sequencing, Recovery Logic
vs Progress Override) 2. Revised Schedules (Updating for Scope Changes, Adjusting Durations/Lags/
Constraints) 3. What-If Analysis (Simulating Delays, Forecasting Finish Dates, Float Consumption)
Practical Exercises: - Introduce 2-week delay in critical path - Prepare revised/recovery schedule -
Compare baseline vs revised project finish
Module 3: Delay & Impact Analysis (2–3 weeks)
Topics: 1. Delay Analysis Methods (As-Planned vs As-Built, Time Impact Analysis, Collapsed As-Built
Method) 2. Multiple Critical Paths in Delay Analysis 3. Claims Awareness (Owner vs Contractor Delays,
Excusable vs Non-Excusable) 4. Reporting for Delay Analysis (Graphical, Gantt/PERT)
Practical Exercises: - Simulate delays in multiple critical paths - Produce TIA report in Primavera -
Document delay cause and impact
Module 4: 4D & Power BI Reporting (2–3 weeks)
4D Scheduling: - Linking 3D BIM model with Primavera schedule - Sequencing construction in 4D -
Clash detection & progress visualization
1
Power BI Reporting: - Extract Primavera data to Power BI - Dashboards: Critical Path, Progress vs Plan,
Resource Heatmaps, Delay & Recovery Reporting - Advanced visualizations for management reporting
Practical Exercises: - Create 4D simulation of dummy project - Generate Power BI dashboard with
schedule & progress data - Present recovery scenario visually
Module 5: Capstone Project (1–2 weeks)
• Take mega-project dummy schedule
• Apply delays, out-of-sequence progress, resource leveling
• Produce: Baseline vs revised schedule, multiple critical paths analysis, recovery schedule, Power
BI dashboard, 4D visualization
Recommended Tools
• Primavera P6 Professional (latest version)
• Microsoft Power BI Desktop
• Navisworks / Synchro / 4D BIM software
• Excel / CSV for data export
Suggested Weekly Plan
Week Focus
1–4 Advanced Primavera scheduling, critical path, multiple float paths
5–6 Recovery & revised schedules, what-if analysis
7–8 Delay & impact analysis, multiple critical paths
9–10 4D modeling & Power BI dashboards
11 Capstone project (integration)

Key Tips
• Simulate real-world scenarios, not just software clicks
• Keep a daily exercise log
• Focus on critical path, float, and reporting
• Practice defending schedule decisions as if in a site/management meeting
