III. Learning Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preparatory Activities
1. Greetings
“Good Morning, Class!” “Good mornig, ma’am!”
2. Prayer
“Let us pray first, may I ask Mr./Ms. to lead “ Let us put ourselves in the
the prayer?” presence of the Lord….. Amen”
3. Checking of Attendance
“Who is absent today, class?” “None, ma’am!”

“It’s good to know that all are present

today.”
B. Developmental Tasks
1. Drill
“Before we proceed,
I prepared a test for you on “Yes, ma’am”
how fast you can answer some question.
Are you ready?”

“If you want to answer, just raise your (a student raise his/her hand)
hand.” “ The answer is 96, ma’am”

student)
“Very good. Another one.”
“25 is the answer ma’am”

“Very good. Let us give 3 claps for them
class.”

2. Motivation
“Class, this morning we will have an
exciting game. Are you ready?
The title of our game is “FILL ME”.
Mechanics: Write the letter on the box that
corresponds each number in the alphabet.
I will give you two minutes to complete the
game.”

“I will group you into two groups. In two
minutes, the group that will finish first or
does more correct answer will be the
winner. I will give 4 points for the first and 2
points for the second so it is up to you to
think how you will do the task to attain your
goal and after 2 minutes you post your
works on the board.”
“Yes, ma’am!”
“Understand class?”

“So the first group will be column 1 to

column 3 and the second group will be
column 4 to column 6.”

Now, go to your groups and be ready.

“ Now, everybody will read the group
of words being formed in the game.”

“Very good!”

C. Lesson Proper (One of the students will answer)

1. Discussion “Ma’am, it is all about measures
“Based on our games, what do you think is of central tendency”
our topic for today?”

“Exactly! Today let us learn together the

Measures of Central Tendency”. “A measure of central tendency
is a single, central value that

what comes in to your mind?”

“That’s correct, thank you” “Mean (or average) , it is the

most useful among the measures
“ Class, there are three measures of of central tendency”
central tendency.
The first is the Mean.
Everybody read!”

WHAT IS MEAN?
“Mean is also called as average, it is the
most useful among the measures of central
tendency.”

-How to compute for the mean?

“Simply, add all the scores in a set of data
and divide by the total number of values.
Mean is given in the formula,
s
Mean ( )=
n
Where s is the sum of all data and n
is the number of data” s
Mean ( )=
n
“ What is the formula again for
getting the mean?”

“ Okay, we have here a two

examples”

First Example:
The Math scores of 10 students in a 30
item quiz. Find the mean.
25, 19, 23, 16, 27, 30, 24, 20, 17, 19
So from the formula given, let us try to
analyze and then substitute the given to
the formula.
s
Mean ( )=
n
25+19+23+16+ 27+30+24 +20+17+19
=
10
220
=
10
= 22
“Therefore, the mean grade of 10 students
is 22.”

Second Example:
The table below shows the 2nd Quarter
Grades of John. Find John’s average
grade for the 2nd Quarter.

“Try to solve it in your notebook, and I will

be calling someone to solve it on the
board.”

“Very good, your answer is correct.”

“Yes, ma’am”
“How about the others? Did you get the
correct answer?”
“Do you understand now how to solve the
mean of the given data?”

“Okay, let us proceed to the second

measure
of central tendency, the Median.
Everybody read!”

WHAT IS MEDIAN?
“Median is the midpoint of an

specific value or will fall between
-How to compute for the median? two values.”
“All you have to do is to arrange the scores
in either increasing or decreasing order.
Then, the middle number among the
arranged data is the median value. If N is
even, median is obtain by getting the
average the two middle numbers.”

When the number of values (n) is

odd, the formula we will gonna use is,
Median(

)= ( n+12 )th term

When the number of values (n) is
even, the fula we will gonna use is,

Median( )=
( ( n2 )th term+( n1 +1)t h term
2
)
Where n is the total number of
value, 1 and 2 are the constant number.

“What is the formula, when the number of

Median( )= ( n+12 )th term
values is odd?”

Median( )=
“Okay, if the number of values is even?”

“Very good, class. Lets proceed to the

( ( n2 )th term+( n1 +1)t h term

examples”

First Example:
Below are the ages of 5 teachers of San
Isidro High School.
Find the middle age. 35, 59, 22, 46, 31

-First we need to identify if our values is

even or odd and then arrange it in
increasing/decreasing order.
- For this example we will use an
increasing order to arrange the values.
22, 31, 35, 46, 59

“So from the formula given, let us try to

analyze and then substitute the given to
the formula.”

Median( )= ( n+12 ) th
term n=5

( )= ( 5+12 ) th
term

( )= ( 62 ) th
term

th
( )= 3 term

Therefore, the median age of 5 teachers is

35.

Second Example:
The Math grades of 10 students are 80, 85,
88, 84, 87, 89, 83, 80, 90 and 94.

“Arrange the values in an increasing order.

Since, the middle point falls between two
values, to find the median use the formula
given, let us try to analyze and then
substitute the given to the formula.
“Arrange the values in an increasing

“Okay, thank you. Lets solve it using the

formula for even”

“What is the median in the math grades of
10 students”

Therefore, the median of the 10 students is

“Yes, ma’am”
86.
“Do you understand now how to find the
median of the given data?” “Mode is the most frequently
occurring value in a set of data.
“This time, let us proceed to the next There are some instances where
measure of central tendency, the Mode. the data has no mode.”
Everybody, read!”

WHAT IS MODE?
Mode is the most frequently occurring
value in a set of data. There are some
instances where the data has no mode.

“We have here the four type of mode”

Types of Mode
1. Unimodal - single mode
2. Bimodal - two modes
3. Trimodal - three modes
4. Multimodal - four or more modes.

To find the mode of a set of data, we are to

consider the following:

a) Select the measure that appears the

most often.
Example: “23 is the mode,ma’am”
The scores of 10 students in their pre-test
and post-test are 22, 23, 20, 23, 24, 25, 26, “24 occurs twice and 23 have the
23, 24, and 27. greatest number that appears.”
“Which score appears the most often in the
given set?” “Unimodal, ma’am”
“Why is it 23 and not 24? Since 24 also
appears often in the given set of data.”

“What type of mode is it?”

“Very good!”

b) If two or more measures appear the

same number of times, then each of the
value is a mode.
Example:
The weights of eight boxing players are “The mode of the given set of
recorded as follows (in pounds); 206, 215, data is 206 and 301, ma’am and it
206, 305, 282, 301, 301, 266 is bimodal”

“What value appears the same number of

times in the given set of data and what
type of mode is it?”
“That’s correct!”

c) If every measure appears the same

number of times, then the set of data
has no mode.
Example:
In the MTAP competition, the 10
participants have the scores of 21, 19, 20, “Every value in the data”
20, 23, 30, 23, 30, 21, and 19.
“There is no mode ma’am”

“What value appears the same number of “Because every value in the set
times in the given set?” of data appears the same number
“Therefore, what is the mode?” of times”

“Why is it that the given set of data has no “Yes, ma’am!”

mode”
“None, ma’am!”
“Do you understand now how to find the
mode of a given set?”

“Any question?”

2. Generalization
“To sum it up. I have here the lyrics of a
song, I want you all to sing after I sing to
you the melody, okay? When you forgot
about measures of central tendency, you
can sing this song.” (Students sing with the melody)
