Well-motivated employees are important for the following reasons:

Firstly, there will be positive customer [Link] employees are more likely to provide excellent
customer service, which is important for the restaurant (K&U). In this way,the employees of the restaurant
will greet customers warmly, attend to their needs promptly, and handle complaints or issues with a positive
attitude (App).

The second reason is that there will be increased productivity and efficiency. Motivated employees tend to
be more productive, working efficiently and effectively (K&U) to ensure that tasks such as food preparation,
serving, and cleaning are done quickly and to a high standard (App).

Well-motivated employees are more likely to remain with the business for longer periods. Hence, there is
higher employee retention and low labour turnover. This is important for the restaurant, as this reduces
recruitment and training costs, as the need to constantly hire and train new staff is minimised. Additionally,
retaining experienced employees ensures that the workforce is skilled and familiar with the restaurant’s
operations, resulting in better service quality and smoother day-to-day functioning. An experienced team can
handle tasks more efficiently, address customer needs effectively, and contribute to a consistently high
standard of service, all of which are essential for maintaining the restaurant's reputation and operational

compare the two job applicants in Appendix 1 and decide whom you would choose to employ. Justify

Patel– well qualified, worked in restaurants but not for long, sporting interests – healthy person with little
time off work – management style is the same as the rejected style.

Guitano– not well qualified, experienced in the restaurant business but moved around a lot, person type
hobbies, single – lots of time to work – leadership style fits in with restaurant.

Level 1 – Mr Patel has a lot of experience in the restaurant business. 1 mark for each suitable suggestion.

Level 2 – E.g.
Mr Patel has a a degree in Business Administration which means that he is well qualified to be a manager.
He can take good decision. He also has a lot of experience in the restaurant business but he seems to have
moved around a lot between different restaurants. This may be because he is not very good at his job or
maybe he does not like to work in one place for very long. Either way, this is not good as if he is not good at
his job the restaurant will not want to employ him and if he doesn’t stay in a job long the restaurant would
need to recruit someone else and that costs extra money.
Mr Guitano has less qualification compared to Mr Patel. However, he has around 20 years of experience as a
restaurant manager in almost 10 restaurant. This means that he has more exposure about the work and he has
been able to developed multiple skills and expertise which make him a good candidate for this position.
Moreover, as he is single, he will be able to show more commitment towards the restaurant which is an
advantage for lakeview. The fact that Mr Guitano also help in charity work, it can be concluded that he is a
good person who has empathy. And this is good traits for someone offering customer service.

As per Appendix 2, Guitano is the best candidate for lakeview. Since Guitano has a democratic management
style, it will be more appropriate to motivate employees. He will consult employees while making decision
which may make the latter feel valued and more motivated thereby achieving sense of belonging as per
Maslow Hierachy of Needs. Moreover, since Guitano has more experience as a restaurant manager, he will
be more careful with money and also can offer better customer service compared to Mr [Link],as Mr
Guitano is single, he will be available to work in weekends compared to Mr Patel who is married with 4
children
