Example: Morbidity method
You are the newly appointed head pharmacist in the hospital. You want to Quantify the quantity
of Cloxacillin 500mg for the new Dermatological hospital you are appointed. There is no
previous data on consumption. You know it’s wise to choose morbidity method. As there are
many health problems that are treated by Cloxacillin, In this case you are only expected to
calculate the quantity of cloxacillin for Bacterial folliculitis
You recall that from your pharmacotherapy course that the management of Bacterial
folliculitis is Cloxacillin 500mg, P.O. QID for 7days. You did a literature review and find out
that the health problem is as common as 300 cases per 1000 inhabitants. There are
1,256,483 contacts around the hospital. You expect 25% of those cases will get treated by
Cloxacillin 500mg.
1st The average or the standard treatment is calculated as
Q E=DCU X N D X LD
=500*4*7
=1400mg
2nd The number of treatment episode Q E: Treatment episode
ET =N C × F
=300* 1,256,483 DCU : Basic unit per dose
=376,945 contacts of patients with Bacterial folliculitis
Q T = ET X Q E X PT N D: Doses per day
=376,945 * 1400 * 0.25
=131,930,750mg L D: Treatment episodes in days
change it to capsule ≈ 263,862 capsules
change it to strip=26,386 strips F: Frequency of the problem
N C : Number of contacts in thousands
ET : Treatment episode
PT : cases expected to be treated
