Define ethnocentrism and cultural relativism
Analyze situations through pictures/texts to determine
whether they exhibit ethnocentrism or cultural relativism
Explain the importance of cultural relativism in attaining
cultural understanding on situations in the community.

fact that cultures, differ and each
culture defines reality differently.

better than others.

and standards set in
one’s own culture.

on other cultures.

-is the tendency of people to put their
own culture at the center and to use
their cultural standards to judge the
behavior and beliefs of people of
different cultures.

RELATIVISM
is the idea that cultural practices, beliefs,
and values should be understood and
evaluated in the context of their own
cultural system, rather than being judge
according to the standards of another
culture

is a belief that cultures are equally
complex. There is no such thing as superior
or inferior culture.
CULTURAL
RELATIVISM
this means that different cultures should be
respected for their unique qualities, and
that what is considered “right or wrong” in
one culture may not be the same in another.

is the ability to understand a
culture on its own terms and not
to make judgements using the
standards of one’sown culture.

is someone who believes and sees culture
as relative meaning, they do not judge
other people’s practices and understand
that there is no such a thing as right or
wrong nor good or bad when it comes to
culture.
