De Broglie Matter Waves Explained

The document discusses the dual nature of matter, highlighting that it exhibits both particle and wave characteristics, as proposed by Louis de Broglie. It introduces the De Broglie wavelength equation and its applicability to different masses, emphasizing that wave nature is significant for microscopic particles. Additionally, it provides formulas related to kinetic energy and potential difference, along with a numerical example for calculating the wavelength of an electron.

1. Introduction to Dual Nature of Matter

What is Matter?
Matter implies mass.
Mass is composed of particles → Particle Nature.
The Dual Aspect
In addition to particle nature, matter exhibits Wave Nature.
”Every moving particle has a wave associated with it.”

2. De Broglie Hypothesis

The Hypothesis
Louis de Broglie proposed that:
Stationary Matter → Particle Nature.
Moving Matter → Wave Nature.

Definition
The waves associated with material particles in motion are called Matter
Waves (or De Broglie Waves).

3. The De Broglie Equation

This equation connects the wave nature (λ) with the particle nature (p).

h h
λ= = (1)
p mv
Where:
λ = De Broglie Wavelength
h = Planck’s Constant (6.626 × 10−34 J · s)
p = Momentum (m × v )

4. Applicability of the Theory

Massive Objects
Elementary Particles
(e.g., A Ball)
(e.g., Electrons)
Mass (m) is large.
Mass (m) is very small.
Wavelength is tiny (≈ 10−37 m).
Wavelength (λ) is measurable.
Result: Wave nature is
Result: Theory holds good.
unobservable.

5. Relation with Kinetic Energy

Step 1: Kinetic Energy Formula

1
K = mv 2
2
Step 2: Momentum in terms of K

p= 2mK

Step 3: The New Formula

h
λ= √
2mK
Observation: As mass (m) increases, wavelength (λ) decreases.

6. Relation with Potential Difference

Using the Work-Energy Theorem:

W = K = qV

(Where q is charge and V is Potential Difference)

Substituting this into the energy equation:

h
λ= √ (2)
2mqV

7. Shortcut Formula for Electrons

Substituting the constants for an electron (me , e, h):

r
150
λ= Å
V
OR

12.27
λ= √ Å (3)
V
*Where V is in Volts and the result is in Angstroms.

8. Numerical Example

Problem: Find the De Broglie wavelength of an electron accelerated by

600 Volts.

Solution: Using the shortcut formula:

12.27
λ= √
600
12.27
λ=
24.49
λ ≈ 0.5 Å

Summary

1 Matter has a Dual Nature (Particle & Wave).

h
2 De Broglie Wavelength: λ = mv .
3 Wave nature is significant only for microscopic particles.
4 Formulas to Remember:
λ = h/p

λ = h/ 2mK√
λ = 12.27/ V Å (for electrons)
