Water Quality Analysis and pH Calculations

The document is a tutorial focused on the quality of water, presenting various calculations related to pH levels, hardness, and ion concentrations in water samples. It includes exercises on determining acidity, mixing solutions, and calculating total hardness, carbonate hardness, and non-carbonate hardness based on given data. The tutorial serves as a practical guide for analyzing water quality through specific chemical parameters.

Tutorial Three

Quality of Water
1. pH of sample A, B and C are 4.4, 5.4 and 6.4 respectively. Calculate how many times
sample A is acidic than sample B and C?
2. Find out the pH of a mixture formed by mixing the following two solution.
pHA=7; volume = 300ml
pHB = 5; volume = 700 ml
3. The analysis shows following results in mg/l.
Ca = 65; Mg = 51; Na = 101.5; K = 213; HCO3 = 248; SO4 = 221.8; Cl = 79.2
Find the total hardness, carbonate hardness and non-carbonate hardness.
4. Calculate TH,CH and NCH if Ca++=160 g/m3,Mg++ = 30 mg/m3;NH4+ = 2 mg/m3;HCO3-
=300 g/m3
5. The analysis of water from the tube well has shown that all the three principal cations
causing hardness have same concentration. If CH = 57 mg/l and TH=117 mg/l. Calculate a)
Value of NCH b)concentration of principal cations c) Total alkalinity.
6. If 400 ml of water with pH of 6 is mixed with 700 ml of water with pH of 8. What will be
the resultant pH of the mixture? (TU,IOE,2069)
7. The hardness of water sample was found to be 300 mg/l as [Link] hardness was found
due to Ca and Mg ions only. The concentration of these ions are equal in water. The water
analysis showed the concentration of HCO3 was 150 mg/calculate (i) The concentration of
Ca and Mg (ii) Alkalinity of water (iii) Carbonate and Non-carbonate hardness of water.
(TU,IOE,2071)
8. The analysis of water showed the following results in mg/l.
Na+ = 30.2 Mg++ = 28.4 Ca ++ = 75 K+ =32.9
Cl- =32.3 HCO3- = 120 SO4--- = 52.8 NO3- = 12
The concentration of strontium (Sr) is equivalent to a hardness of 12.5 mg/l and the
carbonate alkalinity in the water is zero. Calculate carbonate hardness, Non-carbonate
hardness and total hardness.
