Functions of the Muscular System
1. Producing movement : Mobility of the body as a whole reflects the activity
of the skeletal muscles, which are responsible for all locomotion; they
enable us to respond quickly to changes in the external environment.
2. Maintaining posture. We are rarely aware of the skeletal muscles that
maintain body posture, yet they function almost continuously, making one
tiny adjustment after another so that we can maintain an erect or seated
posture despite the never-ending downward pull of gravity.
3. Generating heat. The fourth function of muscle, generation of body heat,
is a by-product of muscle activity; as ATP is used to power muscle
contraction, nearly three-quarters of its energy escapes as
4. heat and this heat is vital in maintaining normal body temperature
Major Organs And Their Functions
Skeletal Muscles
Function : These are voluntary muscles, meaning you consciously control
them. They are attached to bones and are responsible for moving the body,
maintaining posture and stabilizing joints.
Cardiac Muscle
Function : This is an involuntary muscle that forms the walls of the heart.
Its contraction is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body , a
process essential for life.
Smooth Muscle
Function : These are involuntary muscles that line the walls of many
internal organs and blood vessels. They are responsible for moving
substances through systems like the digestive tract (moving food), the
respiratory and urinary systems, and the circulatory system.
Disease
Muscular Dystrophy : A group of genetic conditions that cause muscle
degeneration weakness. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is common type
that beings in early childhood and progress quickly
