CONTENT OF THE LABORATORY NOTEBOOK

➢ Format to be followed while writing any experiment:
AIM—PRINCPLE & THEORY—MATERIAL REQUIRED —PROCEDURE —
OBSERVATION & CALCULATION— RESULTS & DISCUSSION—PRECAUTIONS
AIM/TITLE: Give the experiment a title or what you are going to perform.
PRINCPLE & THEORY: should be a concise statement, in your own words, of what the goal
of the experiment is. This should include the working principle and also have a summary of what
type of data or molecular construct the experiment is expected to produce.
MATERIAL REQUIRED: You should mention the material required before commence the
experiment. You can divide the material into two broad categories, Chemicals &
Plasticwares/glasswares.
PROCEDURE: section should be in outline form. Should describe step by step what you did so
that later you can repeat the experiment exactly the same way. Include key experimental details
as the experiment was performed, not just how you are told to do it in the textbook.
OBSERVATION & CALCULATION: varies from experiment to experiment as some
experiment require microscope and some requires spectrophotometer.
RESULTS & DISCUSSION: this section should include all data gathered in the experiment.
The table or graph generated from the experiment should be clearly pasted. In discussion part the
results should be interpreted or explained. You should present your conclusions as related to the
purpose of the experiment, and the results obtained.
PRECAUTIONS : You should mention the necessary precaution need to be taken while
performing experiment.
• Lab notebook grades are largely on your results and discussion sections, and
how successfully you demonstrate a clear understanding of the work
1 performed
• Use a bound or spiral notebook and blue or black ink for writing purposes
and pencils for graphs only
• Number ALL pages & DATE all entries
2 • Graphs & images should be glued into the lab notebook and thoroughly
labelled.
• Do not tear out or add pages.
• Do not take lecture notes in your lab notebook. Use a different notebook

TENTATIVE TEACHING PLAN FOR THIS SEMESTER
Monday: Will be the Lab classes.
Tuesday: Discussion on previous lab class.
• A Google Doc file will be shared at the end of each lab class, where
the students can post their questions and queries related to that
class. Student will have to write his/her name and roll no. before
posting any question and make sure that there is no
repetition/duplication of the question.
• These questions and queries will be discussed in the Tuesday Class
✓ At the end of each lab class, slides will be shared with all students
for better understanding.
✓ After every two lab classes, on-line test will be conducted.
