CIE IGCSE Biology – Inheritance: Digital Learning Task

⏱ Duration: 1 hour 20 minutes

🎯 Learning Objectives:

- Understand the structure of our genetic information

- Explain why proteins need to be made

- Understand key terminology: Inheritance, chromosome, haploid, diploid, gametes, DNA,

genes, alleles

Task 1: Introduction to Genetic Information (15 mins)

Watch the following video and answer the questions below:

🔗 Video Link: [Link]

1. What is DNA and where is it found? DNA is a bunch of atoms stuck together that
makes it a molecule it’s found in the nucleus.

2. What is the role of chromosomes in inheritance? It carries hereditary information from

one cell generation.

3. How are genes and alleles related? Allele’s are a variant form of a gene.

Task 2: Key Terminology (20 mins)

Complete the table below with definitions and examples.

Term Definition Example

Inheritance Transmission of genetic information from
one generation to the next

Chromoso Long coiled molecule of DNA carrying

me genetic information in form of genes

Haploid A nucleus that has half the number of

chromosomes
Classification:
Internal
Diploid A nucleus that has a full set of chromosomes

Gametes Sex cells

DNA Chemical from which genes and

chromosomes are made

Genes Length of DNA on a chromosomes that

codes for the production of a specific protein

Alleles Version of a gene

Task 3: Why Proteins Need to Be Made (15 mins)

Read the article below and answer the questions:

🔗 Article Link: [Link]

1. What are proteins made of? Amino acids.

2. How does DNA determine the structure of proteins? Protein encoding gene.

3. Describe the function of some proteins and explain why they are important for cell
function.

It’s required for the structure, function, regulation of body tissues and organs. It makes
up muscles and form enzymes which carry out all chemical reactions needed to keep you
alive.

Task 4: DNA and Chromosome Diagram (20 mins)

Use the diagram from the link below to label the parts of DNA and chromosomes.

🔗 Diagram Resource: DNA, Chromosomes, Genes Labeling - Labelled diagram

1. Draw a diagram of a cell containing chromosomes below.

2. Draw an enlarged chromosome.
3. Draw a piece of DNA and label it.
4. Draw a gene and label it.
Classification:
Internal

Task 5: DNA (10 mins)

1. What is the genetic code? AT GC
2. How are amino acids made? Draw a diagram to explain this. Protein synthesis.
Transcription and translation.
3. What is a triplet code/codon? Each 3 nucleotide bases in mRNA, that is the code for a
specific amino acid, is called a codon. An anticodon is a complementary 3 nucleotide
base in tRNA that binds to the codon.
