Understanding Normal Distribution in Statistics

Normal Distribution is a continuous, symmetrical, unimodal, and theoretical probability distribution characterized by its bell-shaped curve. It is defined by the mean and standard deviation, with applications in business forecasting, quality control, and statistical tests. While it is easy to understand and widely applicable, it is limited to normally distributed data and can be affected by outliers.

Normal Distribution :
Classification :-
• Normal Distribution is classified as:
• Continuous Probability Distribution
• Symmetrical Distribution
• Unimodal Distribution (only one peak)
• Theoretical Distribution
Formula:
• The formula of Normal Distribution is:

• Where:
• X = Individual value
• μ (Mean) = Average of data
• σ (Standard Deviation) = Measure of dispersion
• Z = Standard normal variable
Problem :

• Interpretation: The value 60 is 1 standard deviation above the

mean.
Merits :
• Easy to understand and use
• Symmetrical and well-defined shape
• Mean, Median, and Mode are equal
• Widely applicable in statistics
• Useful for probability calculations
Demerits :
• Applicable only when data is normally distributed
• Not suitable for skewed data
• Assumes perfect symmetry
• Extreme values (outliers) can affect results
Uses:
• Used in business forecasting
• Helps in quality control
• Used in statistical tests
• Important in economics and finance
• Used in decision-making processes
Real Life Example :
• Marks obtained by students in exams
• Heights or weights of people
• Measurement errors in experiments
• IQ scores
• Salaries in large organizations
Conclusion :
• Normal Distribution is a bell-shaped, symmetrical
distribution that helps understand how data is
spread around the mean and is widely used in
statistics, business, and real-life analysis.
