ANY MISSING DATA MAY BE REASONABLY ASSUMED
Question 1: (10 Marks)
A- Draw a graph showing the relationship between the ratio of compressive stress-to-yield strength (on the
vertical axis) and the slenderness parameter “λc” (on the horizontal axis) and mention what each part represents.
(5 Marks)
B- Draw schematically two types of cross sections in which tie plates are used for compression members and
indicate the reason of using tie plates for theses cross sections. (5 Marks)
Question 2: (25 Marks)
An industrial building is to be constructed over the rectangular area of dimension 20 m x 40 m as shown in
Figure (1) with clear height 10 m. The building is provided with a car shed of dimension 8 x 20 m with clear
height of the shed is 5 m. Columns are only allowed o solid lines. The main system of the building consists
of portal frames, while the main system of the car shed is truss. It is required draw to scale 1:200 structural
sections A-A and B-B only. (15 marks for A-A and 10 Marks for B-B)

Figure (3) shows a typical end of a tension member composed of two channels 160 from steel 37. The member
is connected to 8 mm gusset plate of steel 52 using bolts M16 grade 8.8 (category A-bearing type) with threads
are excluded from shear planes. Determine the maximum factored load that could be applied to that member.
