Descriptive Writing Practice Task

Read the beginning of the story below carefully.

Your job is to continue and complete the story by using descriptive writing techniques.
Your goal is to paint a vivid picture in the reader’s mind: make them see, hear, feel, taste, and
smell what your character experiences.

Story Beginning:

The forest was unusually quiet that morning. Mist curled around the tree trunks, and the faint glow
of sunrise painted the leaves gold. Jamie tightened the straps of the backpack and took a cautious
step forward. The path ahead was narrow and almost hidden beneath fallen leaves. Somewhere in
the distance, a soft rustling sound broke the silence…

(Continue the story from here. What does Jamie discover? What happens next?)

Use Features of Descriptive Writing:


1. Show, don’t tell – Instead of saying “Jamie was scared,” describe how their hands
trembled or how their heart pounded.

2. Use the ve senses – What can your character see, hear, smell, taste, and feel?
3. Use gurative language – Try using:

◦ Similes: The mist hung like a ghostly curtain.

◦ Metaphors: The forest was a sleeping giant.

◦ Personi cation: The wind whispered through the branches.

4. Vary your sentence lengths – Mix short dramatic sentences with longer descriptive ones.
5. Create atmosphere and mood – Is the setting peaceful, mysterious, or frightening?
