If a body of mass 'm' is sliding on a helical groove as shown, it's motion can be partly analysed with the idea
of inclined plane and partly with the idea of circular motion. Here the radius of circle is R and pitch is h. To
understand it closely, let us make an equivalent path is a plane. In one circle, it travels a horizontal distance
2 π R and vertically a distance h. When we flatten out path to two dimensions, the path looks like that on an
inclined plane as shown. So acceleration along the groove will be using. But actually the body is also moving
in a circular path at any time it's vertical velocity will not contribute to circular motion. But the horizontal
velocity will be along the tangent to circle and can be used to find its angular velocity.

Sol. Question Explanation: Find the tension developed in a uniform closed chain placed symmetrically on a

formula for the component of weight supported by tension.
mgR
T= cot θ 0
L
where θ 0is the semi-vertical angle subtended by the chain from the center of the sphere.
Symmetrical Placement: The chain is a uniform closed loop. For equilibrium, the net force on any
segment must be zero. The total weight of the segment Wsegmentis balanced by the vertical

Tension Formula (Standard Result): The tension T in a uniform chain of mass M and length L

T= cot α 0 ( α 0 is the semi-vertical angle)

The simplest form for this specific problem is often derived from the angle ϕ between the vertical and
