1. What is an input/output device in computer hardware?
An input/output device is any piece of equipment that helps in interaction with computers. Input
devices let user send information to the computer - like when something is typed or clicked by
the mouse. Output devices do the opposite, they show what the computer is doing, like
displaying stuff on the screen or printing documents
2. Explain why a touchscreen is considered both an input and output device.
Touchscreens are considered as both input and output because they pull double duty. On one
hand, they work as output devices by displaying everything needed to see - apps, videos, photos,
whatever. But at the same time, when tapped, swiped, or pinched the screen, we're directly
giving commands to the computer, which makes it an input device too. So instead of needing a
separate monitor and mouse, the touchscreen handles both jobs in one package. And hence
considered as input and output device
3. List any five devices that can work as both input and output.
The five devices that can work as both input and output are
I. Touchscreen monitors
II. Smartphones
III. VR headsets (Virtual Reality headsets)
IV. Interactive whiteboards(interective teaching digital boards)
V. Tablet computers
4. How does a scanner function as an input/output device?
A scanner works as an input device because it takes physical documents or photos and converts
them into digital files that the computer can store and use. However, some modern scanners have
small screens that let the user preview what he/she is scanning or adjust settings before saving,
which gives them a bit of output capability.
5. Differentiate between computer hardware and computer software, giving four examples
for each.
Hardware refers to all the physical parts of a computer that can be actually touched and seen
These are the solid components that make up the machine itself. Software, on the other hand, is
the collection of programs and instructions that tell the hardware what to do. They can't be
physically hold software , it's like the brain that controls everything.
Hardware examples:
I. Monitor - the screen we look at
II. Keyboard - for typing
III. Hard drive - stores all our files
IV. Processor (CPU) - the brain that does all the calculations
Software examples:
I. Microsoft Word - for writing documents
II. Google Chrome - web browser for internet
III. Windows or MacOS - the operating system that runs everything
IV. WhatsApp - messaging application
