Important Questions

Chapter 9
Some Application of Trigonometry
Q1. The angles of elevation of the top of a tower from two points at a distance of 4 m and 9m from the base of the
tower and in the same straight line with it are 60° and 30° respectively. Find the height of the tower
Q2. A ladder 15 m long just reaches the top of a vertical wall. If the ladder makes an angle of 60° with the wall,
then calculate the height of the wall.
Q3. The angles of depression of the top and bottom of a 50 m high building from the top of a tower are 45° and 60°
respectively. Find the height of the tower and the horizontal distance between the tower and the building.
Q4. A boy standing on a horizontal plane finds a bird flying at a distance of 100 m at an elevation of 30°. A girl
standing on the roof of 20 m high building, finds the angle of elevation of the same bird to be 45° Both the
boy and the girl are on opposite sides of the bird. Find the distance of bird from the girl.
Q5. A man standing on the deck of the ship, which is 16m above the water level, observes the angle of elevation
of the top of the cliff as 60° and the angle of depression of the base of the cliff as 30°. Calculate the distance of
the cliff from the ship and height of the cliff.
Q6. At the foot of a mountain the elevation of its summit is 45, after ascending 1000 m towards the mountain up a
slope of 30 inclination, the elevation is found to be 60 . Find the height of the mountain
Q7. The angle of elevation of a jet fighter from a point A on the ground is 60°. After a flight of 15 seconds,
The angle of elevation changes to 30°. If the jet is flying at a speed of 720 km/hr, find the constant
height. (√3=1.732)
Q8. As observed from the top of a 100m tall lighthouse, the angle of depression of the two ships are and 45 .
if two ships are either side of the lighthouse in straight line, find the distance between two ships

Q9. The angle of elevation of a cloud from a point 60 m above the surface of the water of a lake is 30° and the
angle of depression of its shadow in water of lake is 60°. Find the height of the cloud from the surface of
water.
Q10. A bird sitting on the top of a 80 m high tree. From a point on the ground, the angle of elevation of the bird is
45. The bird flies away horizontally in such a way that it remained at a constant height from the ground. After
2 seconds, the angle of elevation of the bird from the same point is 30. Find the speed of flying of the bird.
(Take 3 = 1.732 )
Directions: In the following questions, a statement of assertion (A) is followed by a statement of reason (R).
Mark the correct choice as:
(a) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true and reason (R) is the correct explanation of assertion (A).
(b) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true but reason (R) is not the correct explanation of assertion (A).
(c) Assertion (A) is true but reason (R) is false.
(d) Assertion (A) is false but reason (R) is true.
Q11. Assertion (A) : A 6 m toll tree cast a shadow of length 4 m if at the same time flag pole cast Shadow
in length 50 m then the length of the flag 75 m
Reason (R) If an observer move towards an object like a tree or a building or a tower then angle of
elevation increases
