Abstract: Good reading skills—including critical thinking, comprehension,
and data analysis—are widely recognized as essential components of academic
success in higher education. Numerous studies have highlighted the importance
of critical reading in fostering intellectual growth and problem-solving abilities.
This article explores the advantages of strong reading skills in broadening
perspectives, fostering innovation, and enhancing effective communication. As
higher education students are expected to develop both soft and hard skills, the
role of reading proficiency cannot be overlooked. Additionally, improved
reading skills contribute to better information processing, research capabilities,
and lifelong learning, ultimately shaping well-rounded professionals in various
fields.
Keywords: Reading skills, critical thinking, innovation, academic success,
soft skills.
Introduction:
Reading, as an integral part of every discipline, serves as a foundation for
critical thinking and progress. It not only enhances analytical skills, but also
fosters creativity and problem-solving abilities. Critical reading is the process of
deeply analyzing and questioning a text to understand its content, purpose, and
perspective and to identify any contradictions or inconsistencies within it
(Altunsöz, 2016). We regard “critical reading” as a reading for academic
purposes and for academic success which is an ability to go beyond summary of
main ideas to analysis, synthesis and evaluation, i.e. the ability to critically
comprehend, evaluate, interpret what has been read and apply the results
obtained to solve a given problem (K., Antonova, N. Tyrkheeva, 2021). Without
critical reading dispositions, education’s prerogative to develop an enquiring,
problem-solving, innovative and open-minded attitude remains an admirable
but an unattainable goal (Sophia M. Ndethiu, 2018).
Reading exposes students to diverse perspectives, ideas, and concepts,
which stimulate intellectual curiosity and innovation. In both schools and higher
education institutions, literature has always been a core component of the
curriculum. The ability to read well is intrinsically tied to that of development
and university administrations, lecturers and students cannot afford to take it

for granted (Sophia M. Ndethiu, 2018). For instance, students who engage with
intricate narratives, thought-provoking autobiographies, or complex historical
accounts from an early age develop the ability to analyze situations critically and
respond more effectively. These experiences refine their reasoning skills,
helping them navigate academic and real-life challenges with greater confidence.
As an example, many scientists who have studied human brain, claims the
benefits of reading on quick responding to situations, clear analyzing of
counterarguments, and overall concept. Stanislas Dehaene is a prominent
cognitive neuroscientist who extensively studies the human brain's connection
with reading. He is known for his work on how the brain processes written
language and how reading rewires brain circuits. Dehaene's research has
implications for how we teach reading, with a focus on understanding the
cognitive processes involved in reading and the role of phonics. His work
suggests that reading activates brain areas that originally evolved for vision and
spoken language.
Moreover, reading is not only essential for literature and language studies
but also plays a vital role in other disciplines such as history, physics, and even
technical fields. Subjects that require comprehension of complex theories,
problem-solving, and critical evaluation—whether in social sciences or STEM
fields—benefit significantly from strong reading skills. By developing the ability
to process information efficiently, students can enhance their research
capabilities, improve academic performance, and cultivate lifelong learning
habits. The information age and the technological advances being pursued by all
nations of the globe call for high levels of education where specialized training in
good reading ability is critical (Anderson, 2000).
Karen Manarin et al. identify the following characteristics of critical reading
for academic purposes:
▪ identifying patterns of textual elements;
▪ distinguishing between the main and subordinate ideas;
▪ evaluating credibility;
▪ making judgments about how the text is argued;
Effective communication is a fundamental skill that plays a crucial role in
various aspects of human interaction (D. Uttarakhand, 2021). And good speaking
skill is one of the most significant type of soft skill which everyone should
possess. As people live in the society, communicating is every-day component of
work and study for each person. Reading is a good way of comprehension (T.
Ismailli, 2024). Without good reading habits, it is impossible to engage

effectively in the complex intellectual processes that define the higher
educational experience. Because reading facilitates the acquisition of knowledge,
critical thinking, and the ability to express ideas clearly in written and verbal
form (D. Uttarakhand, 2021).
Reading, directly or indirectly, influences other skills such as writing,
speaking, and listening. Students who read a lot are more likely to speak well
(Lechman, 2007). Through reading, people can learn new vocabulary, identify
advanced grammatical structures, and understand the correct usage of words
and phrases, all of which contribute to effective communication. Reading helps
improve speaking skills by expanding vocabulary and exposing learners to
natural sentence structures, making it easier to express thoughts fluently. By
reading dialogues and speeches, learners can observe how language is used in
different contexts, which enhances their ability to articulate ideas clearly.
Critical thinking skills in reading is the highest level of development of reading
skills (K. Antonova, N. Tyrkheeva, 2021). Reading aloud also helps with
pronunciation and intonation, both of which are essential for effective speaking.
Studies show a strong positive correlation between reading and speaking skills.
Reading improves vocabulary, grammar, and overall language comprehension,
which in turn enhances speaking abilities. Engaging with diverse text,
particularly fiction, can further improve oral communication skills, especially in
areas like storytelling and role-playing. As learners develop stronger reading
skills, they develop more sophisticated speaking skills (T. Ismailli, 2024). It
serves as a foundational skill that supports effective communication (D.
Uttarakhand, 2021).
Conclusion:
Reading skills comes in parallel with writing skills and can help
independently, listening and speaking skills, but often it develops alongside
them and can help build vocabulary that further aids listening and speaking (D.
Ansarey, 2016). Reading exposes individuals to a diverse range of topics,
perspectives, and experiences, expanding their knowledge base, and facilitating
a deeper understanding of the world around them. Effective communication is a
cornerstone of human interaction, enabling individuals to convey their thoughts,
ideas, and information with clarity and precision. (D. Uttarakhand, 2021).
Moreover, critical thinking skills in reading is the highest level of development of
reading skills (K., Antonova, N. Tyrkheeva, 2021). Skills, such as suspending
judgment, questioning, maintaining flexibility, making inferences, predicting
outcomes, and recognizing bias are examples that can be found in both critical

thinking and critical reading textbooks (Sherbourne, 1977). Effective reading
skills empower individuals not only to become more competent learners, but
also, more innovative individuals able to shape their destinies by adapting easily
to the ever-changing societies in which they live (Sophia M. Ndethiu, 2018).
Critical reading is a necessary component for critical thinking and a practice that
is crucial for success in academic and civic life (Carillo 2017; Horning 2007).
Further studies may work on the influence of effective reading on other soft
skills
