PLANTATION AND ADOPTION OF A TREE

1.1 Introduction
Trees are vital components of the natural ecosystem and are essential for maintaining environmental
balance. They provide oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, reduce pollution, support biodiversity, and help
in conserving soil and water. In recent years, rapid industrialization, urban expansion, and
deforestation have caused serious environmental issues such as climate change and loss of green
cover. Therefore, plantation of trees has become a necessary step toward sustainable development.

The Social Connect and Responsibility (SCR) course focuses on experiential learning through
community-based activities. Plantation and adoption of a tree helps students develop environmental
awareness and a sense of responsibility toward nature. As part of this activity, a blackberry plant was
planted and adopted within the college campus to contribute to environmental protection.

1.2 Objectives of the Activity


The objectives of plantation and adoption of a blackberry plant are:

To understand the environmental importance of tree plantation

To promote awareness about sustainability and climate protection

To contribute to the green campus initiative

To develop responsibility by adopting and nurturing a plant

To encourage active student participation in environmental activities

1.3 Description of the Activity


The plantation activity was conducted inside the college campus after obtaining necessary permission
from authorities. A healthy blackberry sapling was selected from a local nursery. The blackberry plant
was chosen due to its medicinal value, fruit-bearing nature, and adaptability to local climatic
conditions.

The plantation site was selected after considering soil quality, availability of sunlight, and water
access. Essential tools such as spade, organic manure, and water were arranged beforehand to ensure
smooth execution of the activity.

1.4 Plantation Procedure


Initially, a pit of adequate depth was dug at the selected location. Organic manure was mixed with soil
to improve fertility. The blackberry sapling was carefully placed in the pit and covered with soil
firmly around the roots. Immediate watering was done to support proper growth.

Care was taken to keep the plant upright and stable to avoid damage due to wind or external
disturbance.

1.5 Adoption and Maintenance Plan


After plantation, the plant was adopted for regular care and maintenance. The plan included timely
watering, removal of weeds, and protection from animals. Regular monitoring was done to observe
growth and health of the plant.

This adoption process helped in understanding the importance of long-term commitment toward
environmental conservation.

1.6 Observations
The soil and climatic conditions were found to be suitable for the blackberry plant. With proper care
and watering, the plant adapted well to the surroundings. New leaves were observed after a few
weeks, indicating successful plantation.

Plantation of a blackberry plant increased greenery on the campus and contributed to environmental
improvement. In the future, the plant will provide fruits and support local biodiversity. The activity

2.1 Introduction
India has a rich cultural and religious heritage that reflects its traditions, beliefs, and social values.
Temples play a vital role in preserving culture and promoting unity among people. They are not only
places of worship but also centers for social interaction and cultural continuity. Heritage walks help
students understand the importance of protecting such cultural landmarks.

As part of the Social Connect and Responsibility course, a heritage walk was conducted to
Chowdeshwari Temple located in Vijayanagara. The visit helped in understanding the religious
significance, cultural practices, and social role of the temple, including regular rituals and annual
festivals conducted there.

2.2 Objectives of the Visit


The objectives of the heritage walk are:

To understand the cultural and religious heritage of the region

To study the role of temples in social life

To observe traditional rituals and festivals

To understand community participation and unity

To document cultural, social, and environmental aspects

2.3 Description of the Visit


The heritage walk was organized to Chowdeshwari Temple situated in Vijayanagara. The temple is
surrounded by greenery and provides a calm and spiritual atmosphere. Devotees from nearby villages
and towns visit the temple regularly.

During the visit, temple rituals were observed and interaction with devotees helped in understanding
daily worship practices. Information about weekly Mahapooja conducted on Tuesdays and Fridays
was also collected, during which a large number of devotees gather.

2.4 Historical and Religious Significance


The temple is dedicated to Goddess Chowdeshwari, who is believed to protect devotees and fulfill
their wishes. According to local beliefs, the temple has existed for many years and holds deep
spiritual importance.

In addition to daily worship, the temple is famous for its annual Jatre conducted once a year during
March–April. During this festival, special poojas and rituals are performed, and devotees from various
places participate with great devotion, strengthening religious faith and social harmony.

2.5 Architectural Features


The temple architecture is simple and traditional, reflecting regional construction styles. Locally
available materials have been used in the structure. The temple layout allows smooth movement of
devotees during regular days as well as during weekly Mahapooja and annual jatre celebrations.

The open surroundings and hill-side environment enhance the spiritual experience of visitors.

2.6 Social Role of the Temple


The temple serves as an important social center for the local community. People from different
backgrounds come together for worship without discrimination. Weekly Mahapooja on Tuesdays and
Fridays encourages regular community gathering and interaction.

During the annual jatre, collective participation of villagers promotes unity, cooperation, and
preservation of cultural traditions. Prasada distribution during festivals reflects equality and social
bonding.

2.7 Environmental Observations


The surroundings of the temple were found to be clean and well maintained. Trees and natural
vegetation around the temple help maintain a pleasant climate. During festivals and weekly pooja
days, efforts are taken to keep the premises clean and orderly.

The peaceful environment promotes respect for nature along with spiritual practices.

Organic Farming

3.1 Introduction
Organic farming is a sustainable agricultural practice that focuses on natural methods of cultivation
while protecting the environment. It avoids the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and synthetic
substances, thereby maintaining soil fertility and ecological balance. Continuous use of chemicals in
modern farming has resulted in soil degradation, water contamination, and health hazards.

Waste management is an integral part of organic farming. Efficient use of agricultural waste helps
reduce pollution and converts waste into valuable resources. As part of the Social Connect and
Responsibility course, a field visit was conducted to an organic areca nut farm to study organic
cultivation practices and waste utilization methods, including areca leaf plate production.

3.2 Objectives of the Visit


The objectives of the organic farming and waste management visit are:

To understand eco-friendly agricultural practices

To study natural soil fertility management

To observe agricultural waste utilization

To learn about biodegradable product manufacturing

3.3 Description of the Organic Areca Nut Farm


The areca nut farm follows traditional organic farming practices without using chemical inputs. The
farmer uses organic manure such as cow dung compost, plant residues, and bio-fertilizers to maintain
soil health. These methods help improve soil structure and increase productivity naturally.

The farm was well maintained with proper spacing between plants, clean surroundings, and
systematic irrigation. The farmer explained that organic farming ensures long-term sustainability and
better quality produce.

usually treated as waste, were collected and stored properly instead of being burned. This helped
reduce air pollution and environmental damage.

The collected waste was reused as raw material for manufacturing eco-friendly products,
demonstrating sustainable waste management.

3.6 Areca Leaf Plate Manufacturing Process


Areca leaf plate manufacturing is a practical example of converting agricultural waste into useful
products. Dry areca leaves are first cleaned thoroughly. The cleaned leaves are then placed in a
specialized machine where heat and pressure are applied to form plates of different sizes.

No chemicals or artificial additives are used in the process. The resulting plates are biodegradable,
natural, and safe for serving food, making them an excellent alternative to plastic products.

3.7 Social and Environmental Benefits


The use of areca leaf plates helps reduce plastic pollution and protects the environment. These plates
decompose naturally and do not harm soil or water resources.

The manufacturing process also creates employment opportunities for rural people, especially women.
Farmers earn additional income by selling areca leaves, improving their economic stability and
supporting rural development.

4.1 Introduction
Water is an essential natural resource that supports life, agriculture, and economic activities.
Increasing population, climate change, and improper usage of water have resulted in severe water
scarcity. Conservation of water resources is necessary to ensure sustainable development.

As part of the SCR course, a field visit was conducted to Krushi Honda, located near Hanaganwadi
village in Harihar Taluka, Davangere district, to understand water conservation techniques used in
agriculture.

4.2 Objectives of the Visit

4.3 Description of the Visit


Krushi Honda is an agricultural support center that promotes modern farming and water-saving
techniques. During the visit, various water conservation methods used in agriculture were explained

Food Walk

5.1 Introduction
Food plays an important role in reflecting the culture, lifestyle, and food habits of a society.
Local hotels and small food establishments contribute significantly to the community by
providing affordable food and generating employment. Such hotels also help in preserving
popular food items and meeting the daily food needs of people.

The Social Connect and Responsibility course encourages students to understand real-life
social systems through field visits. The food walk activity helps students learn about food
preparation methods, hygiene practices, waste management, and the social responsibility of
food service units. As part of this activity, a visit was made to a local hotel named 7 Spices,
which is well known for its biriyani, the most popular and highest-selling item.

5.2 Objectives of the Food Walk


The objectives of the food walk activity are:

To understand the functioning of a local food establishment

To observe food preparation methods

To study hygiene and cleanliness practices

To understand food waste management

To learn about employment generation and social responsibility

5.3 Description of the Hotel (Information Collected from Owner)


The hotel visited is 7 Spices, which was established in the year 2022. According to the
owner, the hotel was started with the aim of providing tasty and quality food at affordable
prices. The hotel serves a variety of food items and caters to students, workers, and local
residents.

The hotel has a small team of workers who manage cooking, serving, and cleaning activities.
The owner actively supervises daily operations to ensure food quality and customer
satisfaction.

5.4 Types of Food Items Served


7 Spices serves a variety of popular food items, including:

Biriyani

Fried rice

Egg burji

Chicken curry

Egg rice

Parota

Among these, biriyani is the most famous and frequently ordered item. It attracts customers
due to its taste, aroma, and proper use of spices.

5.5 Preparation Procedure of Biriyani (Special Item)


The preparation of biriyani was explained by the hotel staff during the visit. Biriyani is
prepared using fresh ingredients and traditional cooking methods to maintain quality and
taste.

First, rice is washed thoroughly and soaked for some time. In a separate vessel, oil and ghee
are heated, and whole spices such as bay leaf, cloves, cardamom, and cinnamon are added to
enhance aroma. Sliced onions are fried until golden brown, followed by ginger-garlic paste.

Fresh chicken pieces are added along with turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder, and
biriyani masala. The mixture is cooked until the chicken becomes tender. Fresh curd and
chopped mint and coriander leaves are added to improve flavor.

In another vessel, soaked rice is partially cooked and layered over the chicken mixture. Water
is added in the required proportion, and the vessel is covered and cooked on a low flame.
This slow cooking process helps the rice absorb flavors from the masala. After proper
cooking, the biriyani is gently mixed and served hot.

5.6 Hygiene and Cleanliness Practices


Hygiene is given high priority at 7 Spices. The kitchen area is cleaned regularly, and utensils
are washed properly using clean water. Raw materials such as rice, vegetables, and meat are
stored in a hygienic manner.

The staff maintains personal cleanliness by wearing clean clothes and washing hands
regularly. Clean drinking water is used for cooking and cleaning to ensure food safety.

collected separately and disposed of properly. Food is prepared based on demand to minimize
wastage.

fulfills its social responsibility toward customers.
