OBJECTIVES:
Define and identify the importance of home economics.
Describe the major areas and career opportunities related to home economics.
Home economics is the study and practice of caring for and managing ourselves, the
home and resources. It is broad field which combines knowledge and skills from
various fields like clothing and textile, food preparation, child development, home
management, consumer education etc. to help people make informed choices in their
daily lives.
Importance of studying home economics
a) To learn basic life skills for managing the home
and living a good life.
b) To learn skills for building and maintaining strong
family relationships and contribute to the
community.
c) To develop resource management skills for
making wise financial decisions.
d) To live healthy and hygienic lives for ensuring our
total well-being.
e) To prepare for certain career opportunities like
food nutritionist, hospitality, textile and garment making, interior decorator,
caterer e.t.c
Major areas in home economics
Home management: This is the study that teaches us how to efficiently manage
the home and its available resources.
Clothing and textile: The study and management of clothing choices and textile
care.
Food and nutrition: This is the study on the management of food preparation,
meal planning, and nutrition.
Consumer education: This teaches individuals how to make informed
decisions about purchases.
Child care and development: This involves the care and nurturing of children
to support their growth and development.
Provision of family housing: This involves choosing appropriate housing,
budgeting for expenses, and ensuring safety and comfort for all family members.
Good housing management contributes to family stability.
Housing and interior decoration: This is the art which focuses on creating a
welcoming and functional space through furniture, color schemes, and layout.
Good interior decoration enhances the family's quality of
life.
Family living: The teaches the overall management of
family life and relationships which involves
communication, conflict resolution, and shared
responsibilities among family members. Strong family
living promotes harmony and support within the
household.

Home economics is a subject that relates with various subjects, enhancing both
practical skills and knowledge.

understanding of nutrition and importance of eating healthy
foods. This connects with health classes, where we learn about
how our bodies work and how to stay healthy.
2. Mathematics: Home economics helps us practice measuring
ingredients and managing our finances, making math practical
and fun.
3. Science: Home economics connects with science through learning about
chemical reactions in food when cooking, baking or how food is preserved.
4. Art: Home economics includes creative activities like sewing and decorating.
This awakens our artistic ability, where we express our
creativity and design skills.

goods and services.
