Weather
●Weather- conditions of the atmosphere over a
short period of time

What is the
weather like ● Weather
today?
●Climate- how the atmosphere "behaves" over
relatively long periods of time.
What is
climate?
●Weather occurs in the troposphere.

Troposphere
●Radiation
●Conduction- transfer of heat through matter
by direct contact
●Molecules collide & energy is transferred
●Occurs between Earth’s surface & molecules in
the air in direct contact with it
Conduction
●Heat moves from warmer substances to colder
substances.
Conduction
● Convection- the transfer of heat by the movement of
currents within a substance
● Air is heated near Earth’s surface and becomes less
dense so the cool, more dense, air sinks down and
pushes the warm air up.
● Creates wind in atmosphere
Convection
● Radiation- The transfer of heat through space by
electromagnetic waves
● Heat travels from the sun to Earth by radiation.
● Most heating of the atmosphere comes from radiation.
Radiation
● Humidity- the amount of water vapor in the air
● Warm air holds more moisture than cold air, so summer
days are often humid.
Humidity
● Dew Point- temperature to which air must be cooled to
reach saturation
● Air is “saturated” when it contains the maximum
amount of water vapor possible at a given
temperature.
Dew Point
● Humidity = 100%
Dew Point ● Dew forms >32°F
● Frost forms <32°F
●High humidity - a small temperature drop will
reach dew point.
●Low humidity - a large temperature drop will
reach dew point.
Dew Point
● Air (Atmospheric) Pressure- the force exerted by the
weight of the air above it
Air Pressure
● Air pressure decreases the farther up into the
atmosphere you go.
Air Pressure
Air Pressure
● Barometer- device that measure air pressure
Air Pressure
● When pressure gets lower, a storm is on the way.
● When pressure gets higher, the weather will be dry and sunny.
