⃣ What is time?
Time helps us know when we do things.
Examples:
• We go to school in the morning.
• We sleep at night.
⃣ Asking about the time
To ask about time, we say:
What time is it?
To answer, we say:
It is …
⃣ Full hours (o’clock)
We use o’clock when the minute hand is on 12.
It is + number + o’clock
Examples:
• 6:00 → It is six o’clock.
• 9:00 → It is nine o’clock.
⃣ Minutes after the hour (past)
We use past for minutes after the hour
(from 1 to 30 minutes).
It is + minutes + past + hour
Examples:
• 5:10 → It is ten past five.
• 7:15 → It is quarter past seven.
• 4:30 → It is half past four.
quarter = 15 minutes
half = 30 minutes
⃣ Minutes before the hour (to)
We use to for minutes before the next hour
(from 31 to 59 minutes).
It is + minutes + to + next hour
Examples:
• 5:50 → It is ten to six.
• 6:45 → It is quarter to seven.
⃣ Digital time (short form)
We can read digital time like this:
• 7:05 → seven oh five
• 11:13 → eleven thirteen
⃣ Times of the day
We say:
• in the morning → from 5:00 to 12:00
• in the afternoon → from 12:00 to 6:00
• in the evening → from 6:00 to 10:00
• at night → from 10:00 to 5:00
Examples:
• It is 8:00 in the morning.
• It is 7:30 in the evening.
• It is 11:00 at night.
AM and PM
• AM = morning
• PM = afternoon / evening / night
Examples:
• 9:00 AM → nine o’clock in the morning
• 8:00 PM → eight o’clock in the evening
